I can't usually tell what watch someone is wearing but sometimes for the more iconic pieces, I can. Today I was at a conference and afterwards groups of people were trying to gain side conversation time with the keynote speaker. I noticed she was wearing a plastic Swatch from the 80's. I asked her if she was wearing a "straight up Swatch". I then had the next 15 minutes of her time exclusively talking about her Swatch collection and then business. Watches have become a new way for me break the ice. I suppose I need to study up on how to identify watches more easily.
Congratulations on finding another that's interested in talking watches. When I inquire or comment about someone's watch, it's usually either "It was a gift and I don't know anything about it" or "I just thought it looked cool and bought it."
Watches are great conversation starters. I always roll my sleeves up around 6:00 and make sure people get a good look. Sometimes I even ask people to read the time from my watch when it's about half-past the hour.
