Ideas for a modern sporty/dressy watch with 1960s styling and sunburst dial for under $1500

Please help me find a watch with the following specs:

37-39mm case diameter (40mm ok if everything else is spot on and the lugs aren't too long; I have 6 1/4" wrists)

sunburst dial (silver, champagne, or charcoal, a muted blue or a deep brown also considered. No electric blue, and the green Seiko Alpinist is also not my thing)

    date display

    seconds hand

100m or more water resist (might accept 50m if everything else is perfect)

    sapphire crystal

extra credit for contrasting chapter ring/minute track, for bracelet, and for a dominance of brushed rather than polished finish

Explanation: I use the date feature on my watches every day, so a watch without date is pointless for me. I am rough on my watches, which is why I need 100m (I have a 30m watch that had water damage even though I thought I had been careful, i.e. no hand washing, no submersion), sapphire, and why brushed finish is preferable (I realize that most 60s watches had a polished finish, but I am not looking for historical accuracy, I just like 60s style.

I already have one watch that fits all the criteria except the contrasting chapter ring, a Seiko SARB035. I love it, but I'd like something a bit nicer, and perhaps with more vintage flair, or a charcoal dialed watch to complement it. Which leads me to wonder, has anyone ever switched the chapter rings on a SARB035 and 033 for that contrasting 60s look?

I have considered vintage, but I really need a sapphire crystal (have done major damage to Hardlex crystals, so a vintage crystal wouldn't last)

Here is what has caught my eye:

    Grand Seiko SBGX063:

but it's at least $1700, and not THAT vintage, basically a nicer version of what I have. There is a brown version with a contrasting minute track, but it's an abomination that alternates between light and dark every 90 degrees. If it had a silver minute track I'd just save up for that one. Or maybe one of you can convince me that the minute track is not an abomination... :)

    Heuer Carrera Calibre 6 COSC:

Love the blue minute track, but the blue small seconds sub dial is a bit much. It's also over $3000, and that's without a bracelet.

Zenith Captain Central Seconds Palladium Fume Brown:

Also over $3000, and maybe the dial is a bit over the top? Saw it in person though, and it is gorgeous.

So what's there to have under $1500?

Hamilton have some nice watches with nice sunburst dials, but most of them are too big, and almost none of them have more than 50m water resist. The obvious choice would be the Intra-Matic in 38mm, but it's too dressy, only 50m water resist, and no seconds hand. What am I overlooking? Any microbrands? Lew and Huey are too loud for my taste. C. Ward doesn't do it for me...

Maybe a used, but recent, plain Tag Carrera with a nice sunburst dial? But the vintage feel of those is pretty limited.

    Please help!

Oh, I had high hopes for the Certina DS and DS-1 COSC, but neither really spoke to me in person. I found both case designs ungainly. The DS too round and shiny, the DS-1 just weird with its super tall sides and bezel-less design.

Seiko SARB065 Cocktail time might work. It has most of the features you are looking for including a striking sunburst dial.

I saw that Heuer at a great price on Jomashop: Tag Heuer Carrera Silver Dial Blue Leather Watch WV5111FC6350 - Carrera - Tag Heuer - Shop Watches by Brand - Jomashop - maybe that could answer your question?

The GS sbgx063 is extremely gorgeous in the metal, and actually has a classic tone with modern elements. And it's such a user-friendly watch that you set-and-enjoy... with a technology that's worry-free for decades or even generations. And it's only about $200 above your suggested budget, but easily worth triple.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in the sbgx063, but ideally I'd stay right around $1000. :(

Check the Mido lineup. I have the Commander 1 Datoday with the silver sunburst dial and mesh bracelet (that is integrated into the case, so maybe not so easy to swap for a strap). Quite a lovely watch and the value is fantastic (ETA 2836-2); you can get it for ~$500, but that is with a Hesalit crystal. Here's mine on my 7.5" wrist:

I would upgrade to the chronometer status Commander 2 COSC version for a few hundred more and it is 40mm with a sapphire crystal. It wears "big" because of the all-dial design, but I think of it as my small dress watch, comparable to my 38mm Longines. There are a variety of dial and bracelet combos to be found for it and you can see it is easier to get to the lugs to change straps.

I have no affiliation of anything with them, but Righttime is offering a Commander 2 with Mother of Pearl Face that is stunning. Not COSC. $850. HERE.
