Please help me find a watch with the following specs:
37-39mm case diameter (40mm ok if everything else is spot on and the lugs aren't too long; I have 6 1/4" wrists)
sunburst dial (silver, champagne, or charcoal, a muted blue or a deep brown also considered. No electric blue, and the green Seiko Alpinist is also not my thing)
100m or more water resist (might accept 50m if everything else is perfect)
extra credit for contrasting chapter ring/minute track, for bracelet, and for a dominance of brushed rather than polished finish
Explanation: I use the date feature on my watches every day, so a watch without date is pointless for me. I am rough on my watches, which is why I need 100m (I have a 30m watch that had water damage even though I thought I had been careful, i.e. no hand washing, no submersion), sapphire, and why brushed finish is preferable (I realize that most 60s watches had a polished finish, but I am not looking for historical accuracy, I just like 60s style.
I already have one watch that fits all the criteria except the contrasting chapter ring, a Seiko SARB035. I love it, but I'd like something a bit nicer, and perhaps with more vintage flair, or a charcoal dialed watch to complement it. Which leads me to wonder, has anyone ever switched the chapter rings on a SARB035 and 033 for that contrasting 60s look?
I have considered vintage, but I really need a sapphire crystal (have done major damage to Hardlex crystals, so a vintage crystal wouldn't last)
Here is what has caught my eye:
Grand Seiko SBGX063:
but it's at least $1700, and not THAT vintage, basically a nicer version of what I have. There is a brown version with a contrasting minute track, but it's an abomination that alternates between light and dark every 90 degrees. If it had a silver minute track I'd just save up for that one. Or maybe one of you can convince me that the minute track is not an abomination... :)
Heuer Carrera Calibre 6 COSC:
Love the blue minute track, but the blue small seconds sub dial is a bit much. It's also over $3000, and that's without a bracelet.
Zenith Captain Central Seconds Palladium Fume Brown:
Also over $3000, and maybe the dial is a bit over the top? Saw it in person though, and it is gorgeous.
So what's there to have under $1500?
Hamilton have some nice watches with nice sunburst dials, but most of them are too big, and almost none of them have more than 50m water resist. The obvious choice would be the Intra-Matic in 38mm, but it's too dressy, only 50m water resist, and no seconds hand. What am I overlooking? Any microbrands? Lew and Huey are too loud for my taste. C. Ward doesn't do it for me...
Maybe a used, but recent, plain Tag Carrera with a nice sunburst dial? But the vintage feel of those is pretty limited.
