    I'm a fraud

If we take a poll, many watch collectors would say they are into watches NOT because it's a chance for them to show others how well-to-do they are or how sophisticated their tastes can be. Most collectors love watches for what they are..an intricate product that carries an aesthetic value while keeping us informed of the time with just a quick glance.

Maybe it's also because there are just so many watches out of reach to collectors due to rarity or price. In fact,i reckon this could really be THE reason why we are into watches. Ok..maybe it's just me. If all watches were to cost only $1 n models won't run out of stock/production,i doubt i'll still be as passionate about watches. I know this will never happen but imagine being able to get an IWC or a Tag or an Omega for just $1..maybe i'll buy plenty at the start but when i start seeing little kids at the playground with their Patek Philippe n Rolex watches,i don't even want to display my watches proudly at home anymore, not to mention telling people i'm into watches.

So i guess the skeleton is outta the closet..i'm not a true watch lover!! Ok..u may throw the eggs now..just try not to hit my eye 'cos i still like reading.

+1. This is the fuel that drives us to work harder, save smarter and obtain goals in life. Whether the goal is to get that fancy sports car or to plunk down $25k on that watch you have dreamed of for years while filling the void with other pieces. Goals and dreams are great to have, without them where would we be and what reason would we have to even collect anything.

Part of my passion for collecting watches is the joy of owning something that I´ve have dreamed of for a long time, achieving the normally unaffordable through hard work and saving my money, while others p+ss theirs up the wall going out drinking and partying. I now buy the watches I was hopelessly unable to afford just 10 years ago, they are my reward to myself for achieving my aims.

Very interesting post Niles.I will agree with the other posters.I think it's all about working hard, and your goals in life or watch collecting..I do believe all of us watch collectors would lose that passion for watches over time if we could buy all watches for a dollar..I may have to do more thinking on this..

Its a passion, and a joy to learn about...and then there is the thrill of the hunt...and yes the fun of the sometimes attention, and questions you get. All this combined makes collecting, and wearing the hobby that it is.

we could all put our watches aside and use other means to tell time....but the fact that a watch tells time is [for me anyway] is not the sole reason why I collect them...its a functional work of art...

So does it mean that you wouldn't be passionate about watches anymore if watches cost only $1 since there is no need for hard work n money-saving strategies? I know some of us will say part of the hobby involves the hunt n the anticipation. Does that mean we cannot love the object for what it is? What happened to appreciating the intricate workmanship put into the movement? So just how true is it when we say we love a watch because of the finishing or the movement or the design?
Is it not more accurate to say,"I love this watch cos it makes me look good as people will think i have taste or i have money or i got something others can't?"

Not trying to start a fight. It's just for the sake of discussion/sharing. After all,we know watches will not be priced that way..no matter how much further the economy slide.

If that was my reasoning, then I would not have collection I have.

I would just save up and buy second hand Rolex(es) ( or fake ones for that matter considering many people can not tell for one and/or they assume they are fake anyways) and be done with it and just show it around.

My collection makes my friends roll their eyes:
"Eberhard? Never heard of it. What, you have to wind it every 8 days? My Kinetic one lasts for whole 6 months" - I LOVE that watch - wearing it today. - Only if the lug size was somewhat of a standard though - 16.5mm this is according to the manufacturer.

If the watches cost $1 each, then I would have TONS!! I love watches and I am sure MANY G-shock collectors believe cost is not the everything.
Everyone needs to know time and it would be hack of fun collecting watches than stamps.
    Chronic flipper...

That is exactly why communism and socialism don't work. If all things are equal, you have no drive to be better because you aren't going to get better things or have a better life for your extra hard work. What's the point. Give me good ol' capitalism any day!

If all watches were $1 I guarantee you there wouldn't be an Patek's or Rolex's.
