I'm thinking.. You got to be kidding me.....

I was picking up my watch today after I had it in for a service. The man that services and repairs the watches is a great guy and I have been visiting his premises for years. He also sells pre-owned watches.
There was this man sitting in the waiting area and he was visibly agitated. I observed this for a few minutes, as there was only he and myself I thought I would break the ice and I said "you here picking up a watch from service"?... He replied "no I'm back to get this watch sorted out its f***ed, I bought it from here about a week ago. After every few days it just stops"...
He then just handed it over to me to have a look at it. It was an omega speedmaster moon watch, a beautiful watch in great condition. I wound the crown and off it went. I told him his watch looks to be working just fine and asked him what he thought is wrong with it.. After a little talking I discovered he hasn't been winding the watch hence that's why it stopped.
He then stood up and said "f*** me dead" and he walked out....

Well...sure - "you've got to be kidding" - but parts of me wonder about the store itself, not necessarily just the owner.
"Sir, be sure to read the directions on winding the watch"
or "Sir, this is a manual winding watch. You'll have to do this every so often. Check the instructions."

A little bit of clarity from the store could have prevented the dude's grief.

I have no idea, I'm guessing when he had come back with it prior

If the guy who fixed/wound it for him last time didn't explain to him what needed to happen after he took it in the first time, then that's not the best place to take your watch.

Re: I'm thinking.. You got to be kidding me.....

I'm thinking a lot of people in this day and age really have no idea what is a manual wind watch is anymore. If such people even give a second thought to what makes a watch work, the world is simply divided into the type that needs a battery and the type that doesn't... the later magically working when one moves around. And the later is still a bit of a mystery as some people will complain that when they put it down for a few days and later pick it up - the watch was no longer working! A complaint that sometimes pops up on say, Amazon.

So that said, I agree with phillyb.... the blame is with the seller. The seller probably should have told the buyer that this is a manual wind.

I agree with all of the posts. I think what took me back a little is that he just took off, I would have been more than happy to show him how to wind the watch and use the other functions.

Ridiculous. It's like the ignorance people have about their own country's highest point in history. Did they have mechanicals before quartz?!? I can't believe that when people buy watches, they have no idea about the engine, what they want or what they're getting. Absurd.

Are you being serious...or just (facetiously) pointing out how absurd it is to think that everyone who buys a watch should know about movements?

Sure, I have "repaired" watches for unsuspecting people, charging as much as $100, for doing what this repairman must have done.

Why get all academic and sheeat, and tell them to wind it, when you can bring them so much joy by secretly winding it FOR them - and they think you're a watch genius who can raise the dead, hm?
