Import/duty fees when buying from the UK - sending to the US?

I'm considering buying a used watch here on the forum. The seller is in the UK; I'm in the US. Will I get hit with any duty/import fee? Thanks.

Probably not if shipped via Royal Mail and USPS, in my experience. In receiving hundreds of watches thru various carriers, only have paid duty on 2 and both were thru FedEx.

Be careful of the seller declaring the watch on customs forms for less than what you are paying for it, as that might effect the recovery amount should it disappear or be damaged in transit.

You have to bank on that fact it could happen. The obligation is on the sender to attach the correct customs declaration onto any package they send.

When traveling from outside the US, there is an exemption under which there is no duty; I think the threshold is $800. I don't know if that's how it works on shipped items or not, but I've bought several watches from C. Ward that were less than that, and was never charged duty. That said, it could happen, but on a ~ $330 watch, it won't be much.

Read this information from U.S. Customs and Border Protection regarding rules for importing. Most of the information posted on forums is 'opinion' and not fact. By the way, the country you're importing from is irrelevant unless it's coming from Canada or Mexico and was manufactured there, in which case it will be duty free (or have a reduced rate) due to NAFTA.

To estimate duty and sales tax for importing your watch, use this online calculator. 215 GBP concerts to 326 USD for the purposes of doing the duty calculation.
