Insured international shipping from Canada?

Please move the thread if this belongs in another forum. I have a badly stretched (to the point that it's unwearable) 18k Rolex bracelet that I'm trying to send to Michael Young in Hong Kong for restoration. To my surprise, I've been completely unable to find a shipper that can offer me insurance on the package. I've tried FedEx, UPS and DHL and they all either told me that they won't insure it, or that they won't ship precious metals at all, because "money laundering". For some reason UPS offers optional insurance on international parcels in the States but not in Canada.

To anyone in Canada that's familiar with international shipping - since I'm not trying to send $3k in gold halfway across the planet and just cross my fingers that it doesn't get stolen, what are my options? Forgive my ignorance if there's a simple solution that I'm not aware of.

I might be stating the obvious but have you tried Canada Post. They insure watches they should insure bracelets.

Read the fine print re: Canada Post insurance. They are happy to take your money to insure, but don't talk about the limits that are actually payable back.

Most I know that need to insure high-value items use a third party service (like ParcelPro) along with a reliable courier (like Fedex).

Absolutely not!!! CP will not cover more than $500.00. Go with Parcel Pro, you can get it completely insured and it's shipped via a courier.

Thank you for correcting me, the only insurance I purchased from Canada Post was on watches under $400 and within Canada, it was more a nice to have than a must have. I had not reviewed any details about the coverage.

That strange. I just mailed a watch to the US from Canada today and insured it for $800 ($2.25 for each $100 and the first $100 is free).

Precious metal or not it shouldn't even matter.

Canada post would allow you to insure your shipment for 2.4 million but still, they would only pay you $500.00. That is their maximum payout for jewellry and watches fall into that category according to CP.

if you have a jewelers mutual insurance policy, they will cover any loss incurred during international shipping (assuming you havent sold the watch)

It's not that I agree with their policy, I really think this should be revisited by CP and an adjustment in the allowable coverage should be increased, by a great deal.

That is another option. 3rd party insurance will give you coverage but CP won't.
