The joy of the non-hacking watch

I admit that I am stupidly obsessive about certain aspects of watches. With a hacking watch that will include a continual attempt to ensure the time is exactly correct and the second hand position is a true reflection of the position of the minute hand between the minute markers, including accommodating the tiny amount of lag that sometimes exists between the hand position when set and the watch movement catching up to it.

I got my first non-hacking watch a couple of months ago (Seiko SKX007) and it’s a really refreshing reminder that outside of work approximate time is all you need. Just take 5 seconds to set and (if you know your watch well enough) don’t bother to do so for another week. A couple of minutes one way or another is not going to change your life, and your phone is right there if you really need the accuracy. Maybe on a more general scale it’s a reminder to relax about a lot of things.

My first daily-wearable mechanical watch — that is, now that I’ve grown up and my old Snoopy watch has gone missing — is also a Seiko SKX. I quickly gained the opinion that both handwinding and hacking are overrated.

One of my other mechanicals can hack, and it doesn’t work right now. Whatcha wanna bet that the hacking lever is the cause?

I understand your sentiment, but non-hacking watches drive me crazy.

I like them all. It's fun to synchronize a watch, but it's also fun to shake one. I don't worry about absolute accuracy with either.

I really like the Meistersinger for the most part. But can you tell me why it has a "0" before the 3, 6, and 9? For balance with the 12? I'm not sure why, but that bothers me

This is an Ante Merīdiem model. It can only be worn during morning hours.

Couldn't care less about hacking. Hand-winding on the other hand, gotta have it.
