    Just because you're unique

I see so many people refuse to get a watch just because it is common and not because the watch isn't good.
My brother was complaining that in Singapore, every one and their grandfather wore some form of Rolex Submariner.

Many here would refuse to wear an Omega or Rolex simply because it is a "default" choice by non-WIS.
How far would you go to demonstrate your uniqueness?

Would you avoid a really good watch simply because it is common?
In cultures like Japan, Louis Vuitton is popular not because you would stand out having one. It is popular because it allows you to be part of the herd.
This is partially why Grand Seiko doesn't give itself a whole new brand.
That is why even the Emperor has a Toyota.

Screw Japan and what passes for sensible there.

I don't bother with Rolex because I can do better for less. If you just have to prove something, go ahead. I'll be over here knowing the time just like you.

    Re: Just because you're unique

People buy watches for a variety of different reasons. The overwhelming majority of even mechanical watch buyers, are not WIS. They are buying for curiousity, prestige, jewelry sake, or because it is expected in the social circle, among other reasons. 'Uniqueness' and it's role in decision-making clearly varies from culture to culture and from person to person within these cultures. As mentioned, the value of group membership is much more valued in the Japanese society that coined the proverb "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down" than in the "give me liberty or give me death" American lexicon... One motivation for buying is not inherently a better motivation than any other. Ultimately, buy want you like and what you can afford. The rest is just sport for WIS who don't follow the World Series...

I buy watches that suit my design preferences. I might get some additional satisfaction if it's uncommon and difficult to find, but it's not my primary motivation.

    Pretty flash Toyota!

I am too cheap to spend the thousands on a Rolex but I would wear an Omega on my other wrist if you gave me one of each.

I don't know that there is any other WUS with a Komrade. I might be unique! It cost about same as a mid level Seiko. Uneek I tell you! I have a vintage Monster on engineer strap, never even seen another Monster in my life. UNEEK! If you are still reading you either appreciate my turn of phrase or you care far too much about what everyone else wears. When I get my Kickstarter watch it may be the only one in 1000 miles. Uneek!!

Afaik unique means one only. Good luck with that.

You are distorting the meaning of unique and use examples when being unique is bad. Who wouldnt want a beautiful unique watch?

I love beautiful watches. I don't really care if it's unique. If I see another person with the same watch we can bond over our awesome taste.

    Re: Just because you're unique

If one relies on his watch to be the thing that makes him unique... well...

Watches are just a thing that people with a bit of money can buy. Whether it's a limited edition of 10 or a Fossil, it's still just a thing you bought to wear on your arm. It doesn't elevate you, if you're lucky you'll elevate it.

Ha, those granpas' Submariners are often more desire than the new 6 digit Submariner. Not the same sub.
