Just Bought - Retail Therapy - Ahhhhhhhh

    Hi All,

As you might remember I was keen to add another watch to my collection and the criteria was that it had to be on a bracelet and preferably not from a manufacturer that I had already got in my collection. After a little bit of saving (in a 4 month no new watch drought) and safe in the knowledge that tomorrow was pay day, I went into town with my short list down to two. It was either going to be the Rolex Milgauss GV or a Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Chronometer (the latter still being on the list despite a couple of posters on here worrying me with QC issues on Omega dials).

Firstly I tried both on. I was leaning towards the Omega as something about the Rolex just wasn't quite working for me on the wrist . Then two things happened:

    1) Wife says "what's with that ridiculous second hand? It looks like a childs toy". Not to be put off I asked the dealer for the discount he was prepared to offer (leading me to number 2)

    2) Zero discount on the Milgauss. Not allowed by Rolex on this model in thier shop. Margin too tight. Etc. And he really wasn't going to budge one percentage point. Well I don't pay full MSRP now unless it is going to be something so rare and high end I have no choice so now the Rolex was definitely out.

Considering I was leaning towards the Omega anyway (as it genuinely looked better on my wrist) I asked about discount on the Seamaster Aqua Terra and negotiated a 20% discount of MRSP. Safe to say that was the clincher and then it simply came down to dial colour preference.

So watch number 10 joined my growing army of timepieces and it hails from Omega. I hope you like it - but if you don't feel free to express your opinions! I'm never touchy if people like my choices or not.

    Here are some pics:

Now I just need to locate a nice jumping hour watch....

Lovely watch--how do you like the bracelet? That's what impressed me most about my Omega. It's very comfortable and feels extremely well-made.

The "teak" dial is a bit like the Skyfall.

To be honest I would rate the bracelet as about 7 out of 10. I guess I am spoilt as the bracelet on my AP RO is just so good - so sturdy - that it is hard for me to love the bracelet on the Seamaster too much. That said it is a perfectly good bracelet and clasp and easily held its own against the Rolex Milgauss GV.

Wow, nice watch, but why do you need an inch thick operating manual - is it because it comes in 54 languages?

Fair enough. Most of my watches aren't on a bracelet, so maybe I'm just in a honey moon stage.

Hideous watch. Sorry you ended up with it.

J/K of course! This is my favorite Omega. And I agree with you: the bracelet could be better built.

My god, your collection is the envy of many a WIS......very nice choice with the omega. In a few years, I will be looking to add something in this price range and both of those will be on the short list. Congrats!

mmmm....thanks for the holiday pics GETS. They reinforce my polarized views regarding the AT. I love the size and multi-layer detailing of the teak dial, raised/luminous markers and super long second hand. Just as much as I despise the shiny borders around the date window and the minute hand (been in a ton of arguments about this, but I find it uncomfortably p*nis-shaped)

Will take a look at the new "Ryder Cup" AT once it arrives at my local AD - the silver dial should reduce the contrast with the date window and I'm hoping the blued steel will offset my aversion to the minute hand
