    Question Lets Talk Cartier - Fashion/Desginer or High-End? (w/ a Poll)

Cartier, it doesn't seem to be discussed enough here. Although they do no necessarily make their own movements, they have been making watches for a century now, the Santos was first designed and made in 1904 and is considered the first mens wristwatch. From there Cartier have contracted Edward Jaeger (of JLC) to make the movements for their watches.

Throughout the years, decades, Cartier has turned into a fashion/jewelry brand and this may be the what is affecting it's appeal to those looking for a watch. They certainly have classic designs and watches. They also continue to produce in-house movement like the 1904-PS MC introduced in this years SIHH.

I really do not know where to classify Cartier. Is it a high-end watch? A fashion brand? Neither? or Both?

    What do you guys think?

Cartier has started manufacturing their own calibers and is migrating slowly into becoming a true "manufacture", probably drawing inspiration from Chopard.

Which is good but I don't think all their watches will get the in-house movement. AT least I hope not because I hope to own a Pasha Seatimer in the future and their prices already carry quite a premium.

Although the new Calibre de Cartier starting at $6,500 doesn't look too back, look and price wise. A bit busy in the pics so I'd have to see it in person before truly considering it.

    New movement:

Yeah, probably not all their watches ... just a select few. I'd love to own a Santos one day.

It is tough call. With the new in-house it does seem to change the landscape. Perception is reality as we all know. I am not sure on this one, I will have to think a bit more.

I consider Cartier to be both. Regardless, I would love to own a Calibre de Cartier or a Santos.

I really like Cartier as they have so much history. The Santos as mentioned still being produced over 100 years later. The iconic Tank line introduced in 1917 still being produced over 90 years later.

Although they were still making the famous models (Santos, Tank, Roadster) over the past 30 years, I think they did what many other brands did and rested on their reputation. Now with the renaissance of watches, they are getting their game back together. Check out the IDOne concept watch (not for sale):

The idea is a watch that never needs regulation. Ceremic/Glass hairspring, oil-free escapement.

They make great looking watches and have a long, un-interrupted history.
    What more can you want?
Don't understand WHY some (lots of ppl.) feel a threat to their masculinity if a watch comes from a maker of fine jewelry?
