Looking for black 2-hander, no date

    Hi

My searches of this forum have drawn a blank, so I've finally registered with this fantastic forum in order to get some advice.

I'm looking for an evening watch to wear at black tie events. I know that a discreet pocket watch is standard for this dress code, but it'll mostly be worn at functions where they don't know the rules.

Having read advice regarding formal dress watches, these are my requirements:
    • Black dial
    • Stainless steel or silver bezel
    • Two hands (or small seconds dial)
    • No date indicator
    • 39mm diameter preferred (my wrists are 7.25"/18.5cm)
    • Less than 10mm thickness preferred
    • Mesh bracelet or black leather strap

The Shore Projects Whitstable on black or steel mesh strap is the best I've found so far, but the explorer style dial doesn't seem very dressy. Further suggestions from you knowledgeable people would be much appreciated. Under £300 preferred. Many thanks.

At 300GBP? Honestly I'd probably just pass on wearing a watch.

Immediately makes me think of Frederique Constant. Like this one below (albeit 40mm):

Current: Rolex Milgauss "Z-Blue" || JLC Master Quartz

That's news to me. I would say that mesh is a definite faux pas though, DLC/PVD black or otherwise. Stick to leather. You're also not getting silver anything for less than 300GBP. Or 3000GBP. Silver would be a terrible metal to use on a watch. White gold or platinum sure, silver not so much. <10mm is tough unless you're going quartz. If you're willing to accept 11mm, you can get a proper auto. I have a slightly off the wall idea - take a Seiko 5 and mod it to fit your requirements. I think the SNKM77 case looks nicer and more expensive than most 5s, and it also meets your size requirements, mostly. It's 39x11mm, with a 20mm lug width.

Take off the dial and hands, and put in a no-date dial. The Yobokies gray fume would work nicely, although I also happen to think that the "classic" FFF style dial works very well in a dress application. Yobokies also sells the matching H. Moser style leaf hands. Simply don't put the second hand on the watch. It will work just fine without it.

Well, if we are being pedantic, black tie is semi-formal. I think a wristwatch instead of a pocket watch is fine to avoid looking eccentric.

Your thickness and budget requirements nudge it towards quartz. Two-handers or small seconds limit it a bit.

Citizen makes some in their Stiletto line that are two-handers with no date, but they might be a bit above your budget.

Timex isn’t a bad way to go if you wear this thing infrequently and want to stay under budget. This is 40mm but if your wrist is 7.25” that’s very okay. $70 before a current 20% off deal for Father’s Day.

They also make a similar one in 41mm with a nicer dial and handset (to me).

Thanks all for your replies. That Frederique Constant looks to be just what I'm looking for. I might have to increase my budget.

    Hi

OK, upping the budget what would be the recommendations at under £500 and under £1000? I see that Tissot used to have a 2 hander in their Tradition range, T0634091605800. Does anyone have any other ideas please?

    Many thanks.

I had to check that, the SNKM77 does not show these broad bevelled edges.

If you lose 2 - completely unnecessary, for what you're describing the intention of getting the watch would be - requirements above, you'll have a bit more to choose from.

Especially regarding "under 10mm thickness" requirement - I always wonder if those who give such advice, ever tried to actually fit a watch under the cuff. It's strictly individual, of course, but I'd venture to guess it's off by at least 2mm, for most real-life situations.
