    Marathon GSAR vs Sinn 556i

    Hi guys,

    Here goes another versus thread! I'm in the market to buy one of the two following watches;

    Marathon GSAR Automatic (medium size) or the Sinn 556i Red Second Special Edition

    I'm in Australia and the places I'd source both watches from price-wise would pretty much be at the same price point (give or take $100 - $200) after taxes. So I'd like to ask the watchuseek community, what your thoughts are on the two options? Opinions from those that own one or better yet both of these watches are most welcome! Literally sitting on the fence on this one with no end in sight.

    Cheers!

    Re: Marathon GSAR vs Sinn 556i

    I owned a Sinn 556i two years ago. I loved the minimalist dial, the solid bracelet. The watch, despite its size, had real heft and the movement visible through the exhibition case-back was a sight to behold with its blue screws and gold colored rotor.

    I felt the 556i wasn't the best watch for at a glance legibility. Because the stick markers are all the same size, I had to sometimes do a double-take when reading the time. The lume was adequate, bright enough to be legible at night, but not Seiko bright. The external AR coating drove me a little crazy because it's a smudge magnet. When clear of fingerprint oil, the crystal is nearly invisible, but it smudges up too easily. The satin finish, particularly around the bezel, is easily marred. It would've been awesome if the case was tegimented.

    For the 556i punches way above its price point as a solid versatile watch -- understated with a hint of stark boldness. The red second on the model you're considering will give the watch a bit more pop. I'd go with the regular model, however, because I prefer the all-white marker scheme.

    Be sure to get the GSAR 41mm new version with 15 Tritium tubes including on sweep second hand. Sapphire crystal, drilled lugs, an ETA 2824-2 movement and is Made in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland, on Obris Morgan strap.

    Sinn is more versatile style-wise, but GSAR is a serious military dive watch. Quite different roles.

    For me personally I wouldn't go with the 'plain' Sinn. Not because of the styling, but because it doesn't have any of the cool tech that defines Sinn to me. No Tegimented case, AR-dehumidifying, or 80,000 A/m anti-magnetic capabilities.

    Out of your two I'd take the more aggressive GSAR. But personally I would save up a bit more for a Sinn 856 or 857. An 857 UTC TESTAF would be my personal choice, but rather more expensive...

    German engineering for the win. I'd go Sinn personally. All their watches are exquisite, and the fact this one doesn't have exotic tech (seldom necessary in daily life) means it can be serviced anywhere rather than needing to be sent to the Sinn mothership.

    The Sinn is a bit of a favourite but there's just something about the GSAR. This has nothing to do with the fact that I plan on getting one ASAP - honest.
