Hi guys. I’m contemplating on acquiring either GSAR USMC or sterile version. I’m having a bit of concern how the 41mm GSAR will fare on my 6.75sh wrist.
I’m also considering taking the mid size 36mm version. Anyone has a side by side picture of the 36mm GSAR with a Rolex sub? Just to have an estimate of the size.
Would be great if you could share pictures of both GSAR sizes. Thanks in advance.
Attached is an image to show scale, this is the 41mm next to a 40mm Rolex Sea Dweller (The Sea Dweller pictured was a hand me down from my brother that passed away and is probably not real this is used to only show size. I don't believe in replicas or support that market.) Good luck, my marathon gsar is great and you typically can get a good deal on the auction sites.
Maybe it's an optical illusion due to the depth of the dial below the crystal, but GSARs look THICC to my eyes. It gives the impression of a watch case you could use to pound tent stakes if your entrenching tool wasn't up to the job. Don't get me wrong, I like toolwatches as much as the next guy, but it certainly isn't going to slide effortlessly under a shirt cuff.
This is why I ultimately sold mine too. I have had a handful of both TSARs and GSARs. I keep going back because I love the look. But they are tall and do not slip under the cuff of a jacket or shirt. I tried the 36mm version a couple years ago. But, because it's a dive watch, the dial/face on the 36mm version is very small and looked like a woman's watch. It is a bit thinner at around 12mm.
If you're not sure, try to find a used TSAR (the quartz version) and wear it for a while. You can easily find nice examples for $350. Then, if you like it, flip it for around what you paid and pick up a GSAR.
I have the mini tsar (quartz) and I'm pretty sure it's 1mm thinner than the mini gsar. The same is probably the same for the full size Marathons. Just something to keep in mind.
Thank you very much guys. Awesome tips and inputs! Greatly appreaciate it. God bless all of you!
I think the “how tall and how would it wear” concern had been fully addressed thanks to you guys. Now, and lastly, it’s down to either the USMC vs. Sterile version decision. I’m definitely getting me a GSAR! Thanks once again.
Guys has anyone tried a non-OEM SS bracelet on your 20mm GSARs? I have a Miltat SS bracelet that I’m planning to use for the GSAR. Would it work? It worked for my Alpinist though
The GSARs size was in no way massive and tall as it looked on the pictures. I’m sharing some pictures. I bought this from Chris Hooper from Windy City watch collector. Superb guy.
I bought my GSAR 4 or 5 months ago, and I was VERY nervous about the apparent size of the thing. I had bought a lot of watches that just wouldn't work due to how tall they were, etc. I've been wearing mine since then on a 6 7/8 wrist w/o any hesitation, and once I bought the bracelet for it, it was all over. I either wear it or wonder why I am not wearing it. I found my moving buddy.
Thanks Guys. I’m truly awestruck by it. I can fairly say that it would be a keeper for years to come. Only regret I have so far was not buying the steel bracelet. Still observing the movement.

Marathon GSAR wisdom (Pre & post purchase experience)
Well, I tried. I truly regret not buying the GSAR bracelet! I do hope succeeding GSAR buyers would consider this And would take note of the pictures I have shared in this thread. Its an awesome watch that deserves to be in its OEM bracelet. Don't get me wrong, the rubber strap is awesome. It would just be nice to swap the bracelets/straps from time to time.
The miltat SEL Bracelet wasn't a fit at all. It was massively loose. The Squale SEL bracelet was a bit loose as well. Could pull it off, but I fear it may damage the end sides of the case. The Squale mesh, was an awesome fit though. It's the winner amongst the three bracelets. Looked and feel good as well.
Anyhow, I'm sharing the pics of my GSAR on the both the Squale SEL and Squale bracelet.
Sorry. The bracelet is a hard pill to swallow as far as price goes and extra shipping and all that would make it harder. I looked for a cheaper option for a long time before biting the bullet but I never found any reference to anyone being satisfied with anything else. Too bad you can't find someone going your way, lots of international travelers here, who could drop it off. It's a long shot, I know.
Indeed. Thanks Herrnano. Greatly appreciate the advice and tip.
Would most likely buy the bracelet. I’m happy with it on a mesh. But I’m also planning to hold on to it as a keeper. Hence, I’m swallowing the bitter pill to purchase one. All in.
Thanks. I did order the bracelet. It’s currently in transit. I could have saved money by buying it straight up when I bought the GSAR!
Hope other GSAR buyers would consider the bracelet when they do purchase one.
From a recently converted Marathon fan, I do hope they would consider reducing the case size to around 40-42mm. Better yet, If they do it the same size of the GSAR, I’d definitely be lining up to get one! Cheers to everyone! Pic posts to follow.
I've had my GSAR for about 4 years now, and have had it on several different bracelets and straps. The OEM bracelet was a bit heavy for me at first, but once I got used to it and got it broken in a bit, it is hard to imagine it on anything else for long.
Before I picked up the Marathon-made bracelet, though, I actually had it on a generic jubilee bracelet, which I thought went really well. It was a bit more light-weight, and it generally had a really nice vintage feel
