    Mechanical chronographs

I am thinking of buying a new watch now, and I feel the urge to buy a mechanical chronograph. However, I canít find any that fit in my price range ($100-$500). Do any of you guys happen to know why these are so expensive, or know of any mechanical chronograph that fit my price range?

You can look for some vintage Seikos (6138 or 6138), and if you want new piece you can find some chinese chronos with seagull movements named Seagul 1963. Otherwise its not possible I think.

Seagull chronos might fit your budget.

The good ones are above your threshold because they use a complicated movement with lots of parts. Best to pay for a watch with a known movement and have a reliable watch.

A chronograph is an additional feature and they're more complex so they're able to change more.

Mechanical chronographs are pretty complex with a lot of moving parts, hence the high price tag.
You can find some recommendations here:

You options are basically either Chinese powered chronograph (Seagull, etc with something like ST19 movement) or luck out on big sale on unpopular watch with 7750 or SW500 movt in it. (Bulova, Victorinox come to mind)

Personally, I think ST19 powered chronos are a good deal as long as QC is done well (well oiled, etc) and in general prefer handwound chronographs to automatics as movement is not obstructed by the rotor.

    Re: Mechanical chronographs

Head over to the Affordables forum where this question is regularly asked.

There are quite a few in your price range, most with handwind chinese movements. A few examples i can think of - Seagull, EMG DL63, Mercer Lexington, Alpha Daytona (mine pictured below). The Alpha's are a bit of a marmite watch because they are a clear homage and quality can be inconsistent. I have only positive things to say though, mine has been flawless, is the one watch i see people regularly staring at, and is awesome to see the movement working.

Otherwise Russian chronographs are probably in the price range. Very distinct styling, but very cool. I do love a Strela!
