    Minorva Chronograph (Similar to Breguet)

    Good day fellow WIS,

I have the opportunity to purchase a Minorva Chronograph (styled very similarly to the Breguet 5237 Chronograph) for a price of 170 USD (140 USD price, 30 USD shipping) coming straight out of Hong Kong. Do you guys think this is a good price/good buy? After considerable research, I can only find this model on Minorva's website listed for $399, so it's not a terribly common piece as far as I know. Does anyone have any further information considering this brand? I've read a few threads regarding these pieces and the general consensus seems to be positive but some further reinforcement, or warning, would be appreciated. Please refer to the pictures below.

    Thank you!

    Pertinent Info:
Stainless Steel Case and Display Back
    39mm Case Diameter (excluding crown)
17 Jewel Manual Wind Mechanical Movement
30 minute chronograph subdial and seconds subdial
Leather Strap with Steel Tang Buckle
No info on the crystal though I'm going to assume mineral glass (God forbid acrylic)

(pictures are not mine but are borrowed)

You might get better responses by posting this in the Chinese Mechanicals forum. You could also search that forum for some reviews on Minorva watches; there aren't many, but a few people have them.

That watch uses the Sea-Gull ST19 movement, which is an evolution of the Venus 175. It can be found in Alpha and Perpetual chronographs as well. Of those three brands, Perpetual certainly has the best reputation, but you pay for that extra quality control and level of features (sapphire crystals, better finished cases). Sea-Gull also uses the movement in their own watches, which tend to be much more expensive.

If it is a new watch, that sounds like a pretty good price. If it isn't brand new, keep in mind that servicing this watch will be much more expensive than the cost of the watch. If it was properly lubricated (some have reported Sea-Gull movements being "dry") and has no issues, it should last 7-10 years without needing a service. After that, it is basically a throw-away. So, a 3 year old Minorva could have lived nearly half of its useful life.
    All that glitters isn't chrome.

Would you be devastated if I told you that the movement actually has 23 jewels?

For a USD170, that seems like a veritable steal.
The movement doesn't look half bad!

WOOOOOOW! I didn't even notice that! I suddenly hate it. Inaccuracies like that really drive me up the wall. Thanks for pointing that out
