Don't you just love a movement that has been intricately and mitaculously decorated?

Now one needn't go far to find a watch with an eye catching and great looking movement...but the consequence of that is a price bump to match (I'm thinking A.lange, Dornbluth & Sohn etc etc)

    So my challenge to you:

What watch do you think has a particularly nicely finished movement around a ballpark of $1500?

Can be an in house movement or not.
A display caseback is preferable (that goes without saying)
Not a big fan of skeletonized dials, but if you have one show us 🙂

    Cheers

The alpha movement in my Nomos Club is pretty good looking for the money...

You'd have to go pre-owned but the column-wheel chronographs by Longines look pretty cool.

Movement decoration is pretty rare in the affordable range but one brand that does come to mind is Armand Nicolet. They don't make any of their own movements but they seem to do some in-house decoration and assembly. Even their entry level models have some touches like gold wash inside the engravings and clean engine turning on the bridges.

Christopher Ward also has some decent movement finishing but their finishing patterns are not "traditional" and I think they are done using laser engraving.

At that price Ive only seen a decorated rotor. Stowa, Steinhart and Sinn use custom rotors on some watches that look pretty nice, but nothing like high end watches.

Citizen Signature Collection has some decent decoration on their watches. I'll second the Armand Nicolet, especially those "vintage" movement ones where they rework an old movement. I think they retail for much more than $1500, but in reality they sell for well below your limit. The ones I've seen posted here are beautiful.

Love the Nomos movements. A few in this price point.

I have a Nomos Metro Gangsreserve. It cases the DUW 4401 calibre. It's an in-house movement. It runs 2.8 seconds slow per day. I absolutely love this watch. I received it May 17, 2019. I don't think Nomos sells movements, but if they did, I wonder what they'd charge for this one.

I'd look at Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece watches, pre-owned. Especially nice would be a hand wound model.
