425 USD for my Nivrel Skeleton. Could be 80 USD for my Lucien Piccard, that was about 25 years
ago, which is like 400 or so today.

The $2500 I paid for my bench, tools, and a big stash of parts :)

It paid off very quickly, however.

In all seriousness, the last time I used a watchmaker was to service a fairly rare watch with a broken balance staff for which I could not locate a replacement. A 90-year old watchmaker in the next town over who I use occasionally charged me $95 to turn a balance staff and clean the movement.

For what watch? And technically, an overhaul and restoration is not a service. A "service" implies that the watch is in fine working order and only needs to be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled with lubrication and fresh gaskets. An overhaul is a step up from that and generally means there were problems with the watch and parts were needed beyond routine maintenance and can cost considerably more. Restoration is another category of work entirely and includes repairing of the case (or major refinishing beyond buffing), and refinishing the dial.

I just paid $1,300 for Breguet for a routine service for my Breguet Marine II Chronograph. I also just paid $1,200 to an authorized repair center for routine service on a recent vintage Zenith El Primero powered watch. That same authorized repair center said almost any other chronograph (including Rolex and Omega) would cost half that for a service. I wonder what is so expensive about the EP to service.

Good thing I sold mine, I wouldn't want to be stuck with that bill.
