Smile Need Expert Advice - Getting Started - Quality Timepieces

Hello everyone on this great site,

I have never been a big timepiece person until visiting my local Omega boutique and recently finding this site. Since then I have been addicted and researching and browsing all things watches. I am 25 and make a decent living.

Now to the point, I am looking to get started with my collection. My only current functioning watch is a Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch. I realize that having a watch for each specific occasion is important. I would like to hear any favorite brands or expert advice/experiences people have had starting out.

    Criteria:
    -Quality>quantity
    -I am picky
    -No intention of reselling
    -No interest in <$200
    -Automatic>quartz
    -No Seiko, g-shock, etc.
    -Dreaming of Sub-C

    Thank you!

The best advice I can give is to get what YOU like. Its OK to hear opinions but ultimately its you who's going to wear it. By the fact that you are instantly dismissing Seiko, it tells me you know little about watches and little about value. At the same time you're dreaming of the Sub which is a fine, iconic watch but at the same time I think it's a bit too trivial to aspire to it as the rest of the non-WUS. There are better watches out there.

    The criteria is very generalistic.

Do you prefer sports or dressy? Budget(s)? Any functions you find particularly desirable? What caught your eye in the Omega shop?

The reason I mention the Sub is because it is the one watch that spoke to me and I can afford it. I figure getting the closest general purpose watch that will last me first would be best. Yes, I don't know much besides browsing brands and styles I absolutely don't like. I realize that this thread is somewhat pointless as everyone has different preferences. I just think highly of everyone here and need tips as a newb. Thanks for posting everyone.

If you like the Sub and can afford it, go for it. Otherwise you'll just work yourself the way up to it spending lots on alternatives that will probably not fully scratch the itch. Moreover , although I,m not a Rolex fan, would choose a Grand Seiko over it any day, I have to give it to Rolex in retaining value. Thus if further down the road you fall out of love with said Rolex, flipping it would be a cinch .

If you can afford the Sub why not going for it. Seems to call your name already.
    What about Tudor ?

You should probably do a bit more research.

Seiko makes watches at the $100K+ price point in their Credor line. The top of the Credor line is much higher end, sought after by watch collectors and revered than anything produced by Rolex. Their more modestly priced Grand Seiko line probably starts at around $4K and is generally considered to be comparable to Omega and Rolex. Of course they also make cheap watches commonly found in department store jewelry departments too.
