Need some suggestions for my next watch. Please help!

I want to buy a new watch in 2013 and I want it to be something different than what I have now. I want it to be something special as I will be a dad for the first time this year and this is a watch I wish to pass on to my child, boy or girl.

I won't wear anything smaller than 40mm or larger than 46mm (even though my Breitling is larger than that but it was the first and last large watch I'll ever buy).

I like automatics, love mechanicals and don't care for quartz. I'm not a brand whore and names like Rolex don't impress me more than Stowa. Oh yeah, priced within $6000 range new or used.

With that all said, let's get some suggestions.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers for a New Year!
    Nick

Wow that's a solid budget. Do you have a style preference? Sport, dress, chrono? I'm sure you'll get tons of Omega and Rolex suggestions.

I should have been more specific about style preference. I prefer base dials mainly as I find they truly exemplify the essence of the intended design, whereas I find most chronos to be cluttered, however, the right chrono with little to no clutter is art to me (ie: IWC pilot chronos). I agree, I'm sure I'll get a ton of Rolex and Omega suggestions. At this point the only Rolex I fancy is a Sub ND and as for Omega a Speedy. Again, I really want something different.

Love that JLC but would that still be in my price range?

Maybe Chronoswiss Pacific (40mm) or Grand Pacific (43mm)?

Or maybe something from Longines? Like Heritage Collection. They are under your budget and you could save some of your money with them. Maurice Lacroix could be also something different.

Or maybe you can find Glashütte Original models for good price somewhere, like this Senator Sixties model... That means in-house movements.

I second the Glashütte. Actually, you should sell a few of the current ones and get the real deal to pass on to the next generation, a Patek (might be too small) or an A. Lange (which is now making a slightly larger model of select pieces, still only 39mm I think, but don't rule it out). Otherwise JLC or Vacheron are not bad options either. Right size for JLC might be harder. I think Vacheron has some nice ~40mm elegant watches. Or if you are planning to pass on the watch to a teenager at graduation (or a mid-20 for college graduation), maybe a used Royal Oak (probably slightly above your budget, but still) or the Zenith with an El Primero would be the way to go.
