Need two watches - diver and dress - $10,000 total budget

Hi guys - first post, and I’m sure it is tiresome, but I will go for it anyway.

I’m getting a bonus, and I would like to buy my first automatic watches. I wear a suit Monday-Thursday, business casual on Friday and casual on weekends. I have a max budget of $10,000, and I would like to buy two watches

    - A nice “Daily Driver” dress watch, preferably on a leather/alligator strap
    - A sportier dive watch

I am looking for watches in the 40-41mm size

I have been at Rolex and Omega ADs and looked at other brands (Grand Seiko, etc) recently. I think I want the dressier watch to be the “nicer” watch, and I would like to spend more money on that. My ideas are something like a $5,000 dress watch and something like a $4,000 diver (Tudor Pelagos or Black Bay, Seamaster, etc). The problem is that I can’t find a dress watch in that $5,000 range that I like a lot and that will hold value. A lot of the dress watches I am seeing cost $12,000.

    Any ideas? Thanks much

    My knee jerk...

Dress watch Grand Seiko Snowflake. Incredible in every way, a connoisseur watch. Brilliant movement. Just perfect.

For the diver you’re already bang on with the Tudors or Seamaster 300.

I just picked up an Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300m (41/black) new for $2,700 shipped. Granted that was from the AAFES exchange (AD) with a sale + 10% discount. The watch has blown me away. If you can find one in that price range it would leave a good portion of your budget to find the dress watch. Good luck on your hunt.

I’d definitely be looking at a Reverso as the dress watch option.

How about a JLC Master Control or MUT? Those are pretty sweet.

I wouldn't factor in "holding value" for a watch. If that's important to you, buy pre-owned or buy Rolex.

If you want to "hold value," get a used DateJust and a submariner. I use my vintage DateJust as my formal dress watch (see below). Outside of Rolex, you won't hold value well in that price range.

Another great option, as mentioned previously, is a Reverso and Tudor. You can get a Large Reverso Duo, which will basically give you two watches, new on the grey market for mid-6k.

Third option: Spend the most of your budget and on a really "nice" dress watch (I would get a new DateJust with fluted bezel) and buy something like a Seiko Padi with a lot of straps (mine is below).

for the dress watch, i like this JLC with the small second for $7350 USD:

Master Ultra Thin Small Second 1358420 | Jaeger-LeCoultre

then go Seiko for the diver.

alternatively, for a lot less (and not an automatic i believe), i like this Mont Blanc for the dress ($2580 USD):

    Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Ultra Slim

then for your diver you could be looking at a Rolex No Date Sub.

    Are you considering pre owned?

I was going to say these same things but you beat me to it.

In this price range, anything without "Rolex" on it will probably lose value. Which is okay as long as you know that going in.

    I like his option 3.

    I present: GO Panomaticlunar

Can be had pre-owned around $8k, not sure what they go for new with manufacturer warranty and all that. Leaves room for a solid budget diver like an Oris Aquis, or one of my favorites, the Rado Captain Cook re-release (which comes in 37mm).
Oris Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 111 | Nomos Club Neomatik | Ball Trainmaster Worldtime chrono | Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer | Bulova Sea King

I would be hesitant to spend this kind of money if you’ve never worn a watch before, your tastes and preferences will change a lot in the next year. Maybe get some cheapies and save the bigger purchases for awhile?

If not, get a datejust. Two watches in one and you just saved a bunch of cash
