Neophyte member looking for watch recommendations

    Hi all,

I am looking for a special watch to give to my brother, who works in NYC in shipping finance. His job requires elegant but conservative attire (well-tailored dark suits, black belt/shoes/briefcase), and my budget limits me to under $600ish. I am very open to the idea of a vintage watch. In reading through this forum, you seem like an impressively knowledgeable and helpful group, so thanks in advance for any suggestions! --Bari

What year was he born? Maybe a nice vintage watch from the year he was born.

Are there any more criteria for your brother's watch? There are thousands of dressier choices under $600. You can narrow down the list by voicing your preference for:

    -Quartz or mechanical
    -Case diameter
    -With or without date
-Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, or neither (bars and dots mostly)
-The dial color (I prefer white, especially for business settings)
    -Leather strap or bracelet
    -Additional complications

However, from the list of requirements that you've given, I would buy a classic Seiko mechanical.

This SARB066 may be a bit more than your budget with tax but here's one for about $100 less.

Seiya has a gold version as well for the same price.

Yep, Hamilton Viewmatic or Jazzmaster - always a good choice along with the Tissot le Locle. Any one of a few Seikos, Orients, Citizens, and Bulovas would fit the bill also. One other good company to consider is Christopher Ward.

    Mido Baroncelli:

Available with a white (or silver?) dial and with Arabic numerals or Roman ones instead of indices. Obtainable within your budget, I think ...

    Also, the classic Mido Commander:

Also available in a leather strap version ...
