    Newbie looking for watch recommendations

I suspect there are lots of threads asking for suggestions. Hopefully you're not too sick of them.
I'm brand new to this forum. I've been lurking for a while but just joined. I've been active on custom knife forums but never really spent too much time thinking about watches until recently. I'm starting to get the bug, I fear.
I'm a diver and have two nice Tag Heuer quartz dive watches I've owned for a long time. They're both quartz and need to be sent in for maintenance and batteries. Now that I'm getting excited about watches, I'm looking to add a nice automatic to my collection.

I'm interested in getting a new (or used) watch for everyday wear - work, play, dress (I'm never too fancy and would wear anything for dress). My preferred specifics include:
    Budget $1K max
38-42 mm max / preferably not too thick - I have a 6.75" wrist and 39-40 seems to be the sweet spot for me depending on design
Auto movement - I'm not too knowledgable about movements and suspect I'll be happy with Swiss or Japanese
    Steel case with display back
    Sapphire crystal
3 hands with date +/- day (although I wouldn't rule out a chrono if the face isn't too busy)
    Decent lume
WR to at least 50m to permit swimming, snorkeling - not needed for diving
Will probably go with leather band and deployment buckle though open to bracelet or nylon
I prefer military and pilot designs but I'm open to others, rotating bezel not necessary but a double crown design with internal bezel appeals to me.
I prefer Arabic over Roman numerals.

My current favorites include Sinn 556i or a, Damasko A3x series, Archimede Outdoor Project and Pilot. I really like some of the Magrette, Dievas, and Lum Tec designs but I fear they're all too big for me. The Damasko's don't have an open back and are a bit over budget but I can't get them out of my head... I've looked at a bunch of stuff but I'm hoping someone will suggest THE ONE... Photos would be appreciated, of course.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all this and response.

Have a look at Oris Big Crown ProPilot date 41mm, can be found for your budget.

I had a Sinn 556i, and really regret selling it. 200m water resistance, great lume, display back, and looks good on bracelet or leather. I can't think of a better all-round watch.

I'll second the Oris Big Crown Propilot suggestion as I have been loving mine since I got it a few weeks ago. You'll have to go grey market or used to get it for under a thousand dollars though.

At the cheaper end, would you consider a Seiko SKX007? It's very practical and is actually a very good looking watch IMO. Wears equally well on bracelet or leather. A real design classic.

The only downsides are the lack of hand winding and hacking but neither of these factors bother me.

My 007 on a Hirsch Liberty and 009 on a Super Engineer bracelet (apologies for the quality of the photo...)

Check out Steinhart watches. I know the Ocean Series are Swiss auto, 42mm watches that are very versatile. Welcome to the forum!

I think the Sinn 556i is an excellent choice! Welcome to WUS!

Rather than recommend x or y I'm going to suggest that you look at the WRUW threads to see what floats your boat.
