    Angry Non Watch Magazines

Any of the WIS ever flip through non-watch Magazines like Sharp, GQ, Details, Esquire and come across an "article" on watches....more like a badly disguised advertorial ... and then go into silent screams of rage?

Especially when they pick their favourite watches or the watches they think is great...and include a ton of fashion brands with horrific movements.

    Rant on...

    Re: Non Watch Magazines

Advertorials and similar love pieces are mainstays of the watch magazine trade as well. My advice is to take what you find useful in a watch related article and ignore the rest.

Agree. 95% of the rest is just over-hyped BS.

Articles just like reviews and postings on forums are often written with preconceived opinions, likes and dislikes of the writer. If the writer prefers fashion, then their taste will be in that regard, or if the writer likes/dislikes a certain watch or brand the article may show it. I think intelligent people read articles and form their own opinions on the item itself. So no rant here since I see no problem with articles. I digest every bit of info out there to learn from others opinions.

Here is a good article in GQ. It is very fair and gives good advice for beginners:

The GQ Guide to Men's Watches
"In the Eighties we were so amazingly primitive we still thought digital watches were a pretty neat idea."

Not in the slightest. That people on this forum have various, arbitrary, reasons for liking watches doesn't mean that everyone needs to share them. Or even should. We can talk about movement types, and horological innovation, or historical association, or fit / finish / quality until we're blue in the face. Watches are fundamentally fashion accessories. That 'non-watch magazines' will feature 'non-wis-approved' advertisements / reviews should be both expected and accommodated. Heck, at least they're still advocating that people wear honest-to-goodness wristwatches as a fashion accessory.

    Au contraire :)

I enjoy seeing watches whenever the opportunity presents itself, whether it be window shopping or reading about them in magazines.

    Re: Non Watch Magazines

I'm always amazed when Stauer offers to sell me a $100,000+ watch, for only $99.95, because they've beaten back the evil swiss watch mafia
As TheWalrus points out, at least they get people talking & wearing watches, though hopefully not a ripoff.
Tend to see these in a lot of arms & car magazines.
