NYT opinion piece on watches as investments

This came across my feed today. Interesting, but I can't believe that one guy in his 50's is using watch collecting as a substitute for his 401k.

Apologies if this was already posted. I didn't see it here.

Thanks for posting! I'm picturing a few thousand day-trading bros across the country telling Mom to cash in her 401-k ...

It's an insightful article but IMO, it's playing with fire. Watches are generally a bad investment and no substitute for a 401K or a good trading account. That said, if you have a lot of money to invest in inventory, have the knowledge of what to buy and what not to buy, when to buy and when to sell, then it might be a decent way to supplement your income or savings strategy.

Such articles are commonly found towards the very end of a boom - the earlier buyers need other people to buy their assets off them...

Just sent this to my wife and told her I need to ramp up the watch purchases even further - for investment purposes

If I viewed watches as a safe investment then I would double down on the great deals for buying swamp land in Florida as well........

Although the article gives several examples of watch investors making money the concluding tone is cautionary. I suspect most watch collectors will continue to treat their watch collection as a hobby and look to other assets for long term gains.

I can tell you after collecting for 30 years, there are a ton of my old watches I'd like to have back. 1981 Rolex Sea-Dweller, 1950's Breitling Duograph split-timer, Patek Philippe Nautilus Comet 3710 and Chrono 5980, Universal "Evil Nina," Heuer Carerra, Breitling Navitimer 806...I'm making myself sick, excuse me...

Well, the market is just us as a whole, the aggregate of all collectors. The question we should ask ourselves is how much WE are willing to pay.

Sounds risky to me. More risk than I’d be happy with.
