    Omega, Breitling or IWC

Hi everybody, new to the forum. I have just landed my dream job and I thought I'd get a nice watch to celebrate since I've never been much of a watch wearer.

I have narrowed my choices down to the Omega DeVille, Omega Speedmaster Date, Breitling Superocean Steelfish X-Plus and the IWC Portofino.

Now the field of work I'm in usually puts me in the vicinity of some very pretentious people who like to show off the fact that they can wipe their noses with money so I would like to get the most "prestige" for my money so I don't get sneered at .

I was wondering if anyone could share their knowledge regarding these brands and how they are perceived as I know absolutely nothing about watches. From some reading around this forum and googling it would appear that IWC is the most prestigious of the three although it also appears that many people would dispute this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

welcome to wus! they are all very well respected brands, however if prestige is what you are after the iwc will more than fit the bill. i will dare to state that the majority of the members here will place iwc a cut above the others.

Yep, IWC is the most respected of the bunch but not by a landslide. They seem to be even more highly regarded in Europe than in the US. All 3 brands have had several slots in my box. I lean more towards vintage, but if I were to choose a modern watch for use in the office from your selections I'd go with the Portofino first and the De Ville second. Both are a little classier than the SOSF or Speedy.

Around here, many people will dispute any point you care to make.

My knee-jerk reaction is always IWC, but I think any will do fine, with the most iportant criteria being that you, youself like it.

Always post pictures of the watches in question, you will get a better response.

For your purposes, I would say go with the IWC.

For me, the order of preference would be -
    1. De Ville (if movement is the cal. 8500), else 2. If other movement.
    2. Portofino, else 1. if non cal. 8500 for Omega
    3. Steelfish
    4. Omega Speedy Date
    Collection:
A few of this and some of the other ...

While I agree that IWC is the most respected of those brands among knowledgeable watch folks, I question whether the average snob out there has ever heard of IWC; I very much doubt it. If what you're after is impressing the ignorant-but-monied, there's nothing like Rolex, followed perhaps by Omega.

A little off topic, but funny story. I was talking to an older neighbor who is somewhat well off about watches. We debated about Rolex, talked about classic Omega's, etc., when I mentioned my dream watch was an IWC Portuguese 7-Day. He looked at me like I had 3 heads and asked me what IWC was. I began to tell him and mentioned they're based in Schaffhausen, Switzerland to which he immediately jumped in and said, "Oh! You mean a Schaffhausen watch!" and promptly pulled up his sweater sleeve to reveal a vintage, manual wind IWC Portuguese!!!

The IWC is a great looking watch and definitely one you can wear with confidence under the scrutiny of your pretentious wrist-gazers. Can't go wrong with the speedy date either. The Breitling is a lot more casual and I 'm not a fan of the Deville - but that is purely based on aesthetics.

There is something wrong in my opinion with this entire train of thought. You should not buy a watch to make an impression to someone else, you should buy a watch that makes you want to look at it, that makes you crave the thought of wearing it, that makes you smile...I must say that you are on the wrong track. Do not buy any watch unless and until you can honestly say that you love the watch...not what it might represent to someone else. I think that you will know at an instinctual level that this is sound advice upon reading these words.
