A friend of mine has an Omega Seamaster 100 that was his father's watch. He says it is about 40 years old. The watch wasn't working and a jeweler said that it would be about $400 to fix. Is there enough value to the watch (aside from the sentimental value) to have it fixed for this price?
What's it worth to your friend? If it has a lot of sentimental value and is something that he'll wear then it's probably worth it. If he just wants to fix it up to sell it's probably not worth while.
You can also get a second opinion about the repair costs. If the case, dial and crystal are in poor shape or the movement is damaged then the quoted cost could certainly be reasonable. However, if the movement just needs a cleaning and oiling then perhaps you could find a reputable place to do that for less.
I have my father's Seamaster that's about 50 years old (there's an Omega web site where you can enter the serial numbers to determine how old the watch is.) Happily mine still runs, but it's not something that I ever wear - it's just way too small and I don't care for gold colored watches. Not sure what I'll do when it stops working...
the watch is worth fixing, but the price quoted might be inflated. i suggest you ask for watchmaker recommendation in the forum and then follow up with each one and price their services. It is quite likely that you will get better service and a cheaper price than what is currently being offered.
It depends on what needs to be "fixed." E.g., simple clean/lub, overhaul, or replace movement all can vary quite a bit in cost.
