Both pieces are from the early 90s. Both have their charm. Both are somewhat iconic. Which one would you choose and why?

I like the IWC. That Brietling dial has always been too busy for my liking.

It’s definitely busy but it’s a well balanced busy. It’s actually entertaining to the 👁️

I usually prefer under the radar but a reasonably sized Navitimer is a rare thing these days since the current ones are as big as pie pans. I would swap the bracelet out for a strap though. I never cared for the offset links Breitling used on their bracelets.

I like the IWC but can never get past the date window which just ruins that watch for me.

You know what I feel the same about the date wheel -on every other watch. Believe it or not, it doesn't disturb the balance on the dial in person on this piece for some reason. Maybe they just added the date to rationalize using the jlc 889? It’s not a deal killer for me though as it usually is.

Is a navitimer considered flashy? I can think of many others that seem way more conspicuous.

II would choose the IWC over the Brietlling.

The IWC has a cleaner dial and the hands are more pronounced when viewing the time at a glance. Whereas the Brietling, the dial is too cluttered and the hand are not as pronounced, thereby making seeing the time at a glance more difficult.

My vote is for the Breitling. Sports watches are more fun. And before someone tries to say the IWC is a pilot's sports watch, it's just a dress watch with a triangle at 12.
