Orient Ray II vs. USA II

Well I'm looking for a solid budget diver to accompany my SKX007. I recently sold my Orient Mako USA first edition and really wanted the second recently released version with updated (hacking) movement, removal of second pusher, among a couple other minor changes. The price is about $375 right now.

Then I saw the new Ray II with the same new movement and second pusher delete. And it's only listing for $185 or less.

My question is, what is the general opinion on whether the sapphire and solid end links is worth the price difference between the two.

Anyone own these and have opinions on either? Should I spring for the new USA for the extra $200?

    Thanks guys!

Don't own either but my experience with non-sapphire crystals is not good. Really wouldn't want one. But at 185 bucks you'll likely get your moneys worth before it is objectionable. Don't care about the end links at that price point - with the money you save buy some NATO's. Think the USA is better looking BTW.

I'd get the USA simply because I prefer the slightly different dial. I assume you have already fully considered the less-good but cooler turtle?

So glad they removed the second pusher. That was a killer for me. The new models are very tempting.

$200 seems a lot to pay for SEL and sapphire crystal.

At one time I'd have said Nah! you don't needs sapphire but after I won a teeny scratch on one of my mineral crystals I've changed my tune slightly.

if you're looking for a beater watch, then invest (that sounds oxymoronic I know) in the sapphire. as a budget diver, you likely won't treat the piece as carefully as you would other pieces. you can have even less regard for the watch with a stronger crystal.

Definitely go with the USA, it'd be a good step up from the 007

200 is a lot but this is because the Ray is cheap not because the USA is expensive.

Re: Orient Ray II vs. USA II

I bought the Ray II on rubber shortly before the USA II was released. I am pleased with it. I put it on a Hadley Roma silicone strap.

I have heard a complaint that there is a gap in the crystal on the USA II.

At this point I don't think I could justify the extra cost for sapphire. I'd rather replace the watch.

Additionally, I have previously owned the skx007 and prefer this watch. To me it is of better build quality and more accurate (although very sensitive to position).
