Planned collection vs “Take them as they come”

How many of you buy for the “collection” as opposed to buying individual pieces that you like even if they don’t have any theme (e.g., A classic from each brand; diver/dress/chrono; all divers; all seikos, etc.)?
Is your watch buying mentality “what’s missing?” or do you just have a bunch of random stuff you buy that you like?
If you’re in the middle, how do you decide whether your next $XX goes toward building a theme or toward a piece that you like but would be redundant or wouldnt fit with the rest of your watches?

I do have a general plan for my collection, but since I prefer to buy pre owned, the hunt is getting more interesting, the main brand is Panerai that (to untrained eyes) look all the same which made it more interesting as we gotta go for smaller details instead of just buying a piece I can afford

I think I'm somewhere safe in the middle in that if I see a watch out of the blue that really catches my attention and I can justify the price (which I always somehow am able to do) then I will buy it. On the other hand I also have put thought into my collection in terms of say having an automatic chronograph, a GMT, a moonphase, a few divers, a few dress, some nice quartz's , mechanical hand winding, etc etc etc. Now with that being said I didn't go out there and just buy one for the sake of checking one of those off, no, when one happened my way and it had that special something about it that just did it for me I bought or traded for it.

Planned. Like to have lusted after a watch for at least 3 months before I even consider buying. Also will buy max 1 watch a year, more likely 1 every 2 years. That way I can afford a much better watch and still eat and pay the mortgage!

Re: Planned collection vs “Take them as they come”

I’m a bit in the middle as well. A watch has to pull at my heart strings for me to consider spending money on it, but there are enough watches out there that I can get one I really like and fill a hole in my collection.

I guess it also depends on the size of your collection. 2 black dialed 43mm divers on rubber are a lot more redundant in a 3 watch collection than a 15 watch collection.

When I started collecting, I had rules like these too. I’ve broken every last one of them.

I tend to be more on the 'unplanned' side, buy what catches my eye and looks good. Trying to take more time over purchases though, have had far too many impulsive mistakes...

I have no idea if my collection has a theme and don’t really care. I have only watches I like. Mostly divers, no fancy pants dress watches, multiples from a few brands, all similar size... I know what I like and I know within 2 seconds of seeing a new model whether I’ll own it someday

Re: Planned collection vs “Take them as they come”

I have a scrupulously planned acquisition schedule...

...that falls apart the minute I see a watch I like

Seriously, the only planning I do is to try and avoid buying six or seven same-style watches in a row; however, that can still happen, with the excuse I tell myself that I can always sell off a few of its similar siblings - which rarely happens, of course!

I buy according to what catches my eye at any particular time because most times i buy preowned so it generally depends on my interest at that point.
