    3. Independent watchmaker. Only send it to official service center if my watchmaker cannot source the spare

Depends. My vintage Omegas will always go to Archer. Nomos goes to Nomos because their service is reasonably priced and include parts, if necessary.

Otherwise, I will most likely utilize a local watchmaker.

have only had to service two so far - a quartz Omega which went to an independent and a Rolex which went to an authorized dealer.

I take them to the local AD, who sends them to the manufacturer's official service center. Does that count as 1. or 2.?

Re: Poll: Where do you service your nicer watches

I've struggled with this. I've had some pretty well reputed watchmakers not be up to snuff for the standards (mangled screw heads, stains on dial, poor regulation). My policy is now if I the watch has a display back and a very fine movement, I only send it to the factory or an authorized service center. If the watch is meh, I don't mind a few screws looking mediocre. A good watchmaker is too hard to get nowadays *sigh*
