I prefer hand-winds but it's all about your attitude. You certainly don't *need* a winder to keep your automatic going, just wear it. If it runs down then you can set it again. If, out of the starting gate, you consider winding a hand-wind watch a chore then you've already answered your own question.

Sure they will. Automatics rely on inertia more than gravity.

I recently got a few hand-winds and I'm really starting to prefer them. I only wear my watches to and from work, not during work. For that reason, it's easier to just wind my watch up manually in the morning.

For a watch worn regularly, I prefer an automatic. For a dress watch, worn only on occasion, a handwinder is fine.

If the movement is nicely finished and decorated then (assuming a clear caseback) I prefer the manual so I can actually see it without the rotor blocking my view (and decorated rotors don't do much for me).

Otherwise an automatic is nice to have but not a requirement as I also manually wind them frequently.

    You don't need a winder.

The only type of watch that needs a winder is something really complicated, like a perpetual calendar or grand complication, that you won't wear every day. Those are such a pain to set up that a winder is the only way they'll stay usable.

    Otherwise, it's a convenience.

    Hand wind:

Pro - You get to wind your watch every day.
Con - You have to wind your watch every day.

I'm still not sure which applies to me.
