Purchasing from Online ADs like Hodinkee/W&W

I found myself clicking through the Hodinkee shop this morning and wondering why anyone would buy a TAG from them, for example, at full retail.

Why purchase from an online AD like Hodinkee or Worn & Wound when you can walk into a brick and mortar (or email/call), buy the same watch with the same factory warranty and get a sizable discount to boot?

For example, I purchased a Junghans Meister Telemeter from an AD about a year ago and got a 25% off. I didn't even have to visit their store - all business was conducted online. Worn & Wound's Windup Shop sells the same watch at full retail.

Obviously, I'm not referring to de facto monopolies like Watchbuys or when these sorts of online ADs sell exclusive models like the recent Oris/Hodinkee D65.

Is this just an example of not knowing any better?

I think it's that some folks don't know any better.
I suspect that many high-end consumers discover watches on Hodinkee and never leave ... because they can afford not to.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has tried contacting one of these online shops with an offer under asking price. What was their reaction? I would assume these sites are not set up for that sort of negotiating.

Have bought 2 watches from the Hodinkee site, both were limited edition Swatch, and both sold out immedietly and then went ballistic on the bay.

So their limited edition specials are gonna be sought after, and always at full asking price.

A lot of people go to Walmart and pay full price for a can of beans don’t they?

And what does that have to do with the price of... uh, beans in WalMart?

Is there some alternate market for discounted canned beans I don't know about? If so, hook a WIS up!

I addressed this in my original post. I bought the blue Alpinist from Hodinkee and did similarly well when I flipped it. I'm more interested in why you'd buy a Hamilton Intra-Matic chronograph from Hodinkee, for example, when you can buy the same watch from a traditional AD for less. In fact, I "liked" a jeweler's Instagram post about the blue Intra-Matic chrono and they messaged me on the spot offering a discount. Meaning there's no trick to paying below retail. People want to move product, with certain obvious exceptions like Rolex.

Yeah I don't see the point of buying from Hodinkee. Even if you're a hodinkee homer a simple search can yield AD's willing to deal, especially on Tag.

If anyone has tried to negotiate that it would be interesting to know.

Not singling out TAG, Junghans and Hamilton for any particular reason other than the fact they can all be purchased at a nice discount from a traditional AD.

hodinkee provides an additional year of warranty and cloud storage of the papers I believe. not saying it’d be worth it to me but it’s not nothing.
