Question about starting a boutique aftermarket brand

    Hey everyone,

I'm toying around with starting an aftermarket boutique brand (mainly for fun and love of modding). If the "base" brand is Samsung, but I'm designing a brand "Dennis" that has a "Samsung" movement, can I do that? Can I market it as "Dennis brand with a Samsung movement" or can I only market it as a "Dennis Brand" and just not mention the Samsung movement and samsung "Case"

Really what I would like to do is take the samsung movement and case, and add Dennis All other parts and style.

Are there any implications doing this?

    Thanks!

Re: Question about starting a boutqie aftermarket brand

The first step in starting any Boutique brand is spelling Boutique correctly.
    The rest baffles me.
    Good luck.

Are you asking for legal advice on an anonymous internet forum for watch hobbyists?

Doh! Totally did spell boutique wrong, simple mistake, just typing to fast....

And yes, I am asking here as I think some folks have started boutique brands, and since I am a member, enjoy the hobby this forum..

It's an honest curious question, but perhaps the correct place to start is contacting some sort of legal for counsel, I don't even know which type of legal consult I need.

    Sorry for the baffling question!

I have found that some people just like to hear themselves typing.

Re: Question about starting a boutique aftermarket brand

Lots of 'boutique' and independent brands that use movements from all over the place and either do or don't mention where they come from. A good example are the Swiss ETA movements in many watches, including those from very high end companies. Some rebrand them with an in-house calibre name, some keep to the authenticity of the original calibre, and some use a calibre that denotes the movement has been played with and modified a bit. I use the 7750 in the watches I make, but denote it 775M2 to show it's a 7750 base with the second set of modifications to go into production.

Denis is a good name, but doesn't it have two n's, as in DENNIS, the number 1 fire engine company in the UK.

I think it depends on how original your watches would be. I'd talk to an IP lawyer rather than consulting some randos from the internet.

Thank you, Lornegifford. That sounds very reasonable.

If your asking legal advice about starting a company on a watch forum then my advice would be, you shouldn’t own a company

I guess it depends on what Samsung say, if they are the ones supplying the movement. But I think usually smaller watch brands would make more fuss about who their movements come from when they are not Chinese.
