A quick hello and request for 50th B-Day Watch

First post though I've been lurking for a bit now. Have to say I've learned a lot from here and look forward to learning much more.

I've always had a love of watches and finally decided to jump in and start collecting. My question for the group is that this weekend is my 50th birthday and I'd like to reward myself with a watch but therein lies the problem; I have no idea what to get.

I should add a few caveats. First, I'm a teacher and I don't have loads of disposable income. Believe me, there are lots of higher end watches I love but I have to keep a roof over my head. Second, because I'm a teacher and my wardrobe is mostly casual I'm looking for something I could wear most every day. I'd think my budget at the moment is $1,000 or less (or less being the better option). Last, my meager collection is a Seiko SKX007 I bought recently as my first mechanical watch and a Shinola RunWell Lunar that my girlfriend got me.

So, fire away; I'm all ears.

Maybe something with a chronograph for timing tests or other class activities!

I'd look at Hamilton, excellent value and watches for the price

Happy Birthday and welcome to the forums. I’d be looking at a GADA (go anywhere, do anything) type of watch.

Seiko SARX035 (or a more budget alternative SARB033)

    Glycine Combat 6

Swiss eta movements, sapphire crystal, and still at deep, deep discounts as they transaction under new ownership. They come in 36mm and 43mm sizes, have many different dials to choose from (blue, black, cream, brown, indice only dials, all numeral dials, etc) and all for $300 brand new. 3 years ago they were going for $500-$600 used and $900 new. The quality hasn't decreased since much of what is currently for sale is older stock. They even have a 40mm version with a mechanical moonphase complication for around $400 brand new.

Wow, I love the look of that blue face Glycine! Seems it's sold out most places as I looked around the Interwebs. Is there a place I might have missed that still has it?

I think people have hit a few of the big contenders in that price range already, at least among the more well-known brands. Hamilton, Glycine, and Tissot are all good options. I would personally look at Hamilton, as they have a lot of options in that range. Almost all of their lineup can be had under $1k if you're willing to look at used. They do, however, have a ton in the 42mm diameter/50mm lug-to-lug range, which might not work for you depending on wrist size. They also have a lot of 38mm pieces though. Here's a sample from pieces of theirs I've owned or own. I didn't spend more than $300 on any of these, although most were used.

if you gave me $1,000 and told me to go find a watch suitable for a 50th Birthday.
    I'd pick one of these.
