Recommendation needed for my first dress watch around $3k. Cartier Tank Solo XL or Nomos Tangente?

    Hi everyone

I'm ready to spend around $3k for my first ever dress watch, maybe $3.5k max. I'm thinking of getting either a Cartier Tank Solo XL or Nomos Tangente? What do you guys think? Any other watch which you think I should consider?

    Thank you.

Pre-loved JLC Reverso would be my suggestion but you may have to come up a bit on your price ceiling

Between these two I would definitely take the Cartier - I feel the Tangente is a very overrated watch. Although I would look at other offerings from the Nomos catalog including Zurich, Orion or Ludwig as I prefer them to the Tank Solo XL.

I would rather not list every watch I flipped

I know, I'd really love to own the JLC reverso, but atm, it's quite above my budget. And financially now, I can't quite justify paying that much for a watch which I wouldn't wear as much, not like a BLNR which I'm also looking to purchase atm. I need a dress watch to occasionally wear at some functions for work, which doesn't really happen more than twice a month.

Yes, I am also considering Orion and Ludwig atm. I'm gonna try them on next weekend and see how it goes. Thank you! ;)

I'd go with the Nomos, personally. Not a huge fan of the Tank.

I’d go for a preowned JLC. Some of the older master control models can be had for around that price. I’ve also seen some reversos for 3.8k come up occasionally.

Owned both Tangente and Ludwig, excellent watches for the money (well, at least a couple years ago), either would be great imo . . .

in my opinion a dress watch should have proper pedigree, be heirloom quality and not be styled after a current minimumlist fad. A Cartier Tank is exactly that.

I’ve developed an irrational hankering for Nomos over the last couple days, but even I would agree about the Tank’s pedigree.
