    Recommendations for Engagement Watch

Any of you guys have recommendations for engagement watch between 38mm and 40mm and less than $5,000?

My fiance offered to buy me an engagement wrist watch. Tried the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm and the 40mm Air King today; also tried the Omega Speedmaster FOIS and Aqua Terra 38.5mm. Have to say that I found these pieces to be "underwhelming" (i.e. a bit stale and boring).

Maybe there is something wrong with me... The only piece that surprisingly grabbed my interest so far is the IWC Pilot Mark 18...

What was underwhelming? The color? The markers? The lack of complication? Although if you like the IWC Mark XVIII, then it seems that you have a taste for the somber and straightforward.
If the Rolex OP and Omega AT don't do it for you, maybe look to some of the smaller brands, like Hentschel, Habring, or Dornbluth.
Congrats and good taste in fiances.

im really not sure what to recommend if you find the AT and OP boring but find a matt black face with painted on markers interesting

Thanks for the feedback. Liked the IWC Pilot Mark 18 in blue dial with the various minutes and hour markers. Thought the dial beatifully reflected light and the minute / hour markers made the watch very legible.

Maybe I came away underwhelmed because I had such a high impression of these brands.

do you like dive watches or maybe more of a dress watch? just trying to narrow down if we're only looking for pilot or field watches

edit: do you think you'll wear on the big day or is this more a day to day watch? although you can do what ever you like most people would go for something smaller with a suit

    Re: Recommendations for Engagement Watch

That IWC would not me by choice to mark such a momentous occasion. Id pick something a bit more traditional which will work well for me throughout my life. But, that's me.

The OP and AT are conservative for a reason...

Also, consider Grand Seiko as an alternative.

I went vintage and that’s my suggestion. Try something older, maybe gold, that just feels like an heirloom the minute you put it on. I went with an old Datejust but lots of good options out there. Almost got an old gold AP dress watch, for example.

Try the Nomos Metro? The version with the gangreserve is something unique.

For under 5000 and in that size i don't know... a Grand Seiko maybe? I don't know anyone who has been underwhelmed by a Grand Seiko in the flesh.

If you like the IWC then that’s good enough though while pretty I find it expensive for a watch with a very good yet mass produced ETA movement.

Perhaps also check the Rolex Explorer 1.
