    Removing lume from watch dial

Hey everybody...I知 brand new to this forum and I知 basically brand new to watches, but I知 trying to learn.

Does anybody know how to remove luminous paint off a watch dial successfully, without messing up the dial itself? I知 thinking of buying a dial from Ofrei, and it痴 exactly what I want but it has green luminous numbers. I only want black numbers, and I can tell that it is black underneath the lume. (I壇 search for another dial but I also bought a case from Ofrei that I really like and their dials are the only ones that will fit so far)

    Any suggestions?

    Hi travisratliff,
Scraping it off is the most common way,(check you tube) but don't do it unless you have heaps of practice. Ofrei are a great co, and if you ask them, they may be able to sell you what you want

I second the scraping off, but the paint on the dial is so thin that you risk scratching the dial itself. Another option would be to use a fine tip black sharpie and colour over the lume and see what happens prior to scraping it off

Re: Removing lume from watch dial

    hi all!

Sorry to intrude like this but I just bought a dial for my seiko diver. It is an original dial in good condition but the owner tried, without success, to lume the indices (the indices are not lumed normally).
I would like to know what is the best way to remove the lume without destroying the dial. It is very important to know that the indices have an outer line for the lume and as you can see, the new lume is everyware.

here is the dial I bought and a picture of a new after-market dial:

    the one I want:
    Name: original.jpg
Views: 131
Size: 73.9 KB

    a new one:
    Name: aftermarket.jpg
Views: 132
Size: 42.8 KB

And all this because I want an original dial, and the "AUTOMATIC" on the original is bigger; but basically I want the original dial even though it is not perfect. There are not many on the market in good condition and at a good price.

You certainly can do it by first removing the dial from the movement, and then wash it off with water. The luminous compound will come off when it is wet. Dry the dial and reinstall.

It has been done successful before.....

Thank you; I'll try that and let you know how that works

Leave it to a pro watchmaker.

Should not be expensive to do, but it can be tricky if you don't have the correct tools.
