    Repainted Dial Question

What exactly is meant by the term "repainted dial"? I've seen it used in several ads for pre-owned watches. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Repainted Dial Question

It means the original dial was damaged to the point that is was refinished (redialed). The original finish is stripped off and repainted/reprinted/restored to look as if it did when new.

Results vary from acceptable to tragically horrid.

A great deal of the value of a vintage watch is in the original dial. A redialed watch should cost substantially less than one with an original dial.

Thanks. My next question was about the effect on the value.

    Re: Repainted Dial Question

I would think that the phrase needs no explanation, but, simply put, the dial of the watch was damaged, either from age, water, or sratched, and someone has applied a new coat of paint.
If well done the result can be unnoticible to a casual observer. The other end of the spectrum may include one or more of the following: horrible colors, brush marks, incorrect fonts, incorrect spelling, and dead insects (see: Mumbai Special).
The watches value will almost always be reduced over an original example, though on very old watches (40's or 50's) original dials may be very scarce and a good repaint MAY be something you would consider as an alternative to an expensive, excellent, original or a less expensive, but almost illegible, original.

    Re: Repainted Dial Question

No, the term is pretty self explanatory. I was really leading more toward whether dial repainting is a "thing" in the world of watch restoration and, if so, what does it do to the value? However, your "Mumbai" comment hit the nail of my original curiosity/concern right on the head. Thanks.
