Rolex Explorer 1 or IWC Mark XVI?

Hi all. I am looking for a new watch to accompany my speedmaster, and I'm between a 36mm Rolex Explorer and a 39mm IWC Mark XVI. I have always liked the Explorer 1 for its history and understated looks. The IWC is the closest watch to a Big Pilot that I will be able to pull off with 6.75" wrists. Both have excellent symmetry with the date function on the IWC being a plus for me. Both are similar in price and will likely be worn for a few years before trading them up to something more expensive. (Credit Google search for images). Which would you choose and why?

I would go for the Rolex just because I think it looks better.

I of course attached an image of the 39mm rolex, but I do like the looks of both.

I think you will get an overwhelming number of votes for the Rolex here.

...not to mention the better everything else, especially movement.

Also, the bizarre mix of RAF- and Luftwaffe-derived elements on the IWC is a perfect example how they've been putting fashion ahead of design integrity since being bought out by Richemont.

Despite its commodity movement, the service cost for the IWC is still going to be rather high-end. I'd go for the JLC-movement Mark XII or the still-historically-correct Mark XV if I specifically wanted an IWC pilot's watch. But I wouldn't pay money a for Mark XVI or later, let alone choose one over a Rolex.

Rolex Exp 1 by a mile. The look is classic and has excellent trade-in value esp in regards to this specific IWC model. The IWC Mark series watches doesn't overall seem to have gained much in value over the years.(unless one is talking about the actual Marks that were military issue).

In addition, while the design of the pilots watch is very appealing - it's just not unique to IWC. I'd buy the Explorer and if I really felt I missed out on having a pilots watch, I'd later consider getting one of the many less expensive brands that also make the pilot watch such as Stowa, Sinn and Laco. Yes, I get that IWC may have better finshing than the other, but is it worth the amount over a comparable Sinn? Well atleast in my book it's not worth it.

Exp I 36mm gets my vote.
This is a great IWC MK to own, though. I also fancy the Mk XII and the XV watches as well.

I'm a big fan of Mark XVI, but I think it's quite close to your Speedy as another pilot watch. IMO Explorer would give something more to your collection, besides the obvious "it's a Rolex".

I am generally not a fan of the looks of Rolex watches. Usually like IWC's watches. But on this one I have to go with the Rolex. But I would not get the 36mm watch. Get the bigger ve4sion.
