Rolex Official Service - Worth it?

My father has a DateJust that's about 40 years old, and clearly in need of some service. I called Rolex to ask about their services and learned that they charge at least $650 for the full service (take apart the watch and oil the movement, replace gaskets, etc.) This seems to be a huge premium over sending it to somewhere else like Tourneau. Of course, the Rolex service is official and comes with a 2 year warranty, but what do you all think? Is it worth paying double or more to send it in to Rolex?

At this point I think you're best to go with either an RSC or a Rolex-certified independent with a parts account. As has already been pointed out, it's likely to need more than a general service.

Yes- i would send it to rolex- thats not outrageous and you won't get the same done by anyone else for too much cheaper, then factor in the warranty.

It would be best to bite the bullet and send it to RSC in this case. Don't be surprised if it costs more than the quoted $650 though. as said above, you'll probably need a few things replaced.
Given that it's your Father's watch I'm assuming there is some sentimental value as well and that you're not looking to sell it, so it's best to invest then you have piece of mind knowing the watch is 100% Rolex and will serve you for many years to come.

Rolex service is highly regarded, you will receive your watch back in brand new condition. Go with Rolex.
