I got the Wenger S.A.K. Design (upper left) for my 13th birthday and wore the sh|t outta that thing for 20 years. For the past couple years I knew I wanted a "nice" watch, and my ownership of the Wenger for so long convinced me that I could indeed take care of something that cost considerably more. A couple friends have Rolexes, Breitlings, Omegas, etc, so in my mind those were the only real acceptable "nice" timepieces, so I started saving up for something in that upper tier.
Then, I found this damn website and everything changed...
"Sinn?? What's that?? There are other companies out there that make awesome timepieces??"
I made up my mind on a 6068, but also thought a TAG Caliber 5 could fit the bill, so I started a poll in this forum.
"Wait, I can get something high-quality for less than $2k? For less than $1k?? For LESS THAN $500???"
"Seiko makes 'nice' watches??
A SARB033 found its way to me back in March, and it was everything I wanted. All I really (thought I) wanted was something with a clean dial, no frills, and solid quality. The SARB had it.
BUT, I kept coming back to this site.
"Oh, hey I can get a Timex beater for less than thirty bucks...I guess I DO need a beater for when I don't wanna wear my brand new Seiko, so why not??"
"NATO straps? Don't mind if I do."
Then my taste started to evolve.
"Sure, I could go for something with a busier face--and a GMT hand seems cool--and everyone really seems to like this one..."
Enter the Nighthawk.
"Never been a huge fan of dive watches, but what are these funky inexpensive Russian things that people collect??"
"OK--one significant purchase and I'll back off for a little while...this Alpina company seems to have some heritage, make cool looking pieces, and be reasonably priced...hmmm, what's this 'HEADS UP--I FOUND A BARGAIN' thread all about? Ohhhhhh, snap--wouldja look at that!! A sale!!"
This Alpiner is really very nice. Already got some compliments and only worn it twice.
"I swear, I'm done now. Putting the wallet away......riiiight after Amazon Prime Day."
Resisted dropping big bucks...
"...but another $30 won't hurt, and people here really seem to think this is a great value..."
And the Casio MDV106 showed up yesterday, and it's even better than advertised.
And that's where it stands right now. I think I'm done for a little bit.
"Gabe, you should probably round out the collection with a chrono..."
"Hmmmm, a Zenith El Primero would make a nice grail to shoot for..."
"About that Sinn that started the whole fascination........."
