Sarb065 - Cocktail Time - Is It To Thick? And Why?

I was getting all ready to buy a sarb065 cocktail time watch until I saw a video on youtube comparing it to another Seiko dress watch. I didn't realize these watches were so thick front to back. I was really surprised this as this watch was as thick as a Seiko divers watch. At least thats my perception. And this is supposed to be a slick, sophisticated dressy kind of watch.

I read somewhere that its like 13-14mm or something. I would have figured it would have been at most maybe 10mm.

Is this watch too thick to be a dress watch?

Am I the only one that thinks this?

It is thicker than expected. Whether it needs to be to house the movement, I don't know. It certainly put me off for a while.

I saw one in the flesh recently and the lust returned. Too thick to be a true dress watch? Maybe. Too thick to look great under a shirt sleeve? No

Really? My Epos w/ Valjoux 7751 is 13.19mm.....That domed crystal on the Seiko takes up some space.
You got to admit, it's a beautiful watch..

All of the Sarbs and even the Grand Seiko autos are a bit thicker than I'd prefer, but not enough to stop me from buying one. I don't view any of them as traditional dress watches.

I have found that when watches are thick like that you have a much higher tendency to be bumped and scratched as they stick up. With a divers watch you have that thick metal bezel and with a g-shock - bump away ;) . But with that humpy domed crystal I could see the edge where the curve is getting bumped very badly sticking up as high as it is.

That is providing you actually wear the watch and don't just keep it in a drawer and admire it ;) like many of us do.

Too thick for a dressy watch? No. Too thick for a true dress watch, yes, but it isn't a traditional dress watch anyway. It is probably my favorite dressy watch under $500 once you replace the strap.

Part of it is the domed crystal and part of it is the unnecessary and inappropriate display back. I dislike the back of the Cocktail Time as much as I love the front. It has kept me from buying one.

Well I'm wearing this now. Don't have a side shot, but looks pretty much the same as the Seiko. This is 11.6mm and looks thin and dressy on the wrist. But the big difference is the crystal. While the Orient is flat and flush with the bezel the Seiko sure is tall.

Domed crystal and display back doesn't necessitate the kind of thickness the Cocktail Time has. The Beijing Zungu has a domed crystal and a display back and is 10mm thick:

The crystal really drives up the thickness but it looks super nice. At 40mm I wouldn't consider it your standard dress watch, it stands on its own merits, just a nice watch and it doesn't have to fit into a preconceived box about what a dress watch needs to be.

So really it's the crystal and overall aesthetic the design team was going after driving the thickness not the movement, the movement is the same as the SARB's and they're more towards your standard dress watch measurements.
