Scratches on lugs from strap chnges

Many of the ad of watches for sale say something to the order of: "watch is in pristine condition except for scratches on lugs from strap changes". I have changed quite a few straps/bracelets and have yet to scratch a lug. Even with minimal room between the strap and the lug the area which may suffer damage is the spring bar as that should be the object of the spring bar tool. Can someone tell me how, if you are attempting to compress a spring bar, which is nowhere near the external surface of the lug, the lug gets scratched. Are we talking "klutz"?

No its very common as the spring bar often rests against the underside of the lug based on lug design. Often people are too lazy to use tape beforehand.

I don't think the problem is strap/bracelet removal, it the strap/bracelet re-installation that's the problem. On some watches, getting the end links to line-up and then trying to compress the spring bars end without contacting the lugs is almost impossible. Can you put tape on the lugs? Sure, but then you can trap little pieces of the tape between the end link and case.

Well... I have significantly limited the risk of scratches to only the the back of the lugs by using a real watch tool on the spring pins and placing the watch on its face on a towel when swapping out straps.

It happens as everyone has said it does. In the act of reinstalling. A more often than not occurrence that is pretty much moot in a watches appearance.

Please, could you post a picture of the tool you use to remove a bracelet?
