Thats right, while I'm new here at WUS, I'm not new to horology. Ive been a watchmaker for several years and a watch collector for several more. And snobish or not, Im right. What I see here is a common theme of Seiko owners thinking their watches are the greatest watches ever built outside the house of Patek.
Seiko is essentially honda. And Grand Seiko and spring drive is like having a Vtec Honda, All of you fan boys are essentially this guy.
Don't be that guy. Understand that your seiko is what it is. A crudely built, stamped out, cheap watch, and thats OK. However don't go around saying its on par with watches like JLC, Rolex, Nomos, Vintage Omega, Vintage Longines, Zenith, Girard-Perregaux etc. You guys look at and post pictures of Grand Seiko movements and their accuracy and say, "look, its the best thing ever!". However below the damaskeening is many of the same parts in your $10 seiko movement. And as for profit margins, Seiko is no better then any others. Its time we as a community move past holding Seiko in the same regard as the big boys. Your civic is not a Bentley. It throwing a vtec engine in it doesn't make it as good as one.
Minuets after I post this, I expect a reaction like this^^. Get over yourselves. Seiko is the height of Gimmickry. "Look, My Seiko is solar powered and has a GPS function". Cool Story. Its Still a Seiko. When a new member asks what watch he should buy, recommend vintage or to save more money. Even if has has to pay a guy $70-$100 to service it, at least he's getting a quality watch with a quality movement. This goes beyond names and badges, Its about passion, and Seiko (Grand or not) has none.
All above goes for Citizen, and the like.
