So, I was was asked my advice by a young man....

Short story - my dad was frequently asked for his advice (re: watches) and loved playing the "Recommendation" game on line. Oddly, so do I. This morning a just under 30 yo asked me something to supplement his young collection (600 bucks) - all quartz, sport watches. Guy's a nurse and pretty casual.
I tried to steer him to a mechanical diver - no dice. mechanical fleiger - no dice. Mechanical field watch - no dice. He eventually tells me what he really wants is something to wear to fancy parties - gold w/ gold bracelet. I give him the "gold plating wears off, gold bracelets are pretty blingy" speech but try a few anyway - no dice.
In desperation I remember that one of the more recommended, dressy, $500ish, watches around here is the "Cocktail Time". Don't even think the image loaded completely before he's going "Yes! That's it!"

Next week I'm going to suggest he join WUS, until then I'm going to walk around like a genius.

Good job! Next week, though, you'll have to listen to him complain because his fancy new watch stopped running after a few days.

Maybe so - but the worst that can happen is I'll go from 'Genius' to 'Idiot' - a title I have plenty of experience with!

I'm just poking fun. I think the Cocktail time is the perfect suggestion, but then I'm a watch geek like the rest of us here.

That said, you might want to enlighten him a bit on the care and feeding of mechanical/automatic watches, just so he's not rudely surprised.

I gave him instructions- "Place cocktail in left hand, elbow on bar - lift to mouth repeatedly until empty, repeat as needed until you can't tell the time."

In week 4 ask if if Omega will ever be as good as Rolex.

In week five he will ask who spends more on marketing, rolex, omega or Tag Heuer?

There can never be enough Cocktail Time in the world!

Good job on the recommendation, but not so sure about poisoning him to join us on here. Why derail the young man's life into one of obsessive chronological debauchery?

The cocktail time is a real winner. You can usually find a SARB066 (the gold version) on Yahoo japan if he really wants a gold watch.
