Solid versus Transparent case backs on a watch AND which case backs do you LOVE?

    Hey guys,

I am contemplating on getting a C60 Trident Pro GMT and was admiring the case back on the watch. I was thinking about transparent case backs versus solid ones and thought I would post this up for people to share their opinions.

Always prefer display back except when the movement is unfinished and really crappy looking or it's a pure sport watch.

I guess it really depends on what is shown through the case back. Nicely finished interesting movement, then I say yes, show the back, but for pedestrian movement then nice solid caseback with well engraved logos/maps/pics are more interesting.

For something like the Trident I'd much rather have that nice solid engraved back (nicer than the previous versions) than look at the ETA/Sellita movement.

Generally I would only prefer a display back on a nicely decorated hand wind movement (and I don't tend to go for hand winders) or where the rotor is partly hollow (see Nomos below) or a micro-rotor and the movement is attractive.

I prefer display backs, even if the movement isn't special. I like seeing the machine.

Not a fan. Never understood the attraction. A bit like a glass bonnet/hood on a car. Solid case back every time for me.

Display back. Love machines and even the lowestmovement fascinates me...

Solid for me. Adding glass to the back just introduces another potential failure point for water tightness. You never see them when they are on and, IMHO they don't add a thing to the value.

I have several watches with display backs and not a single one of them shows a movement that is wonderous to behold so I would be just as happy with a solid back. IF the movement is worth looking at I can see the point but most of them show nothing special off.

Display back for me except on tool watches and un decorated movements.
I wonder what is the history on display backs, who was the first etc.
In some cases the back is even better than the front!
