Question Something bold and automatic as a 1st real watch

I'm a bit out of my depth here. I know very little about watches, but I decided not to get an Apple Watch and buy something a little more timeless. Not necessarily hand-down-to-my-grandson timeless, but at least something to last me a decade or two.

I would like something striking or bold, something with a theme or a story to go with it. And I want it to be an automatic.

So far I'm leaning towards these two... Any opinions or obvious alternatives I've missed?

There are a ton of options, but that just complicates things more. I think you picked two nice affordable watches.
The Graf Zeppelin looks good and is a bold watch (dial, complications, case design). At 41mm, white dial, you want to have a 7"+ wrist to wear it, but seems like a solid choice for an Auto w sapphire crystal and 100m WR. Citizen mechanical movement should last a decade without servicing.

At this price point, $500-600, there are also many good watches available from Seiko (JDM) and Orient, as well as, Hamilton and Tissot.

Here's two nice ones from Seiko. The first is Seiko SARB065 Cocktail Time with a striking sunburst dial. The second is Seiko SARB017 Alpinist model is more sporty. Both use the well regarded Seiko 6r15 automatic movement and the fit, finish and detailing is exceptional.

Ohhh.. That last Seiko is pretty sweet. Not too fond of the gold digits, however.

    Oh en Welkom hier!
You are based in the Netherlands so you might want to check some European based watchmakers:

They will all "sit" differently on your wrist, ie, weight, size, etc...

How is your eyesight? I see your two examples are high contrast hands to dials. I've learned that as I have gotten older, watches with "busy" dials are a bit too much for me.

Are you a short sleeve, or long sleeve shirt guy? If you predominantly wear long sleeves, wear a long sleeve shirt when you try on watches. One of my favorite watches just doesn't work with long sleeve shirts...too bulky...

    Just some thoughts...

Hey, chuasam...which Orient is the white guilloche Orient Star? Looked, but couldn't find that model...and I like the execution on that one more than on the Elegant Classics...

+1 for the stowa partito timeless design and german quality. Will always be hesitant to buy an apple watch unlike a timeless mechnical/quartz watch. Every year the apple watch has to be replaced. CPU memory all get better and the watch will be more capable especially more so than the first generation watch. Good choice on choosing something more timeless.
