Sub-$1000 watch for best friend's military retirement?

Hello again, fellow forum members. In addition to my ongoing search for a retirement gift watch for my father, I need to start looking for a gift for my best friend from college, who will be retiring from the military next year.

    • My budget would probably be under $1000 (though I must sheepishly admit that under $800 would probably be more palatable).
    • I'd want to buy new, not used, but don't mind buying grey.
    • I need to get some sense of his current tastes from his wife, but I know that I got him a titanium mesh-bracelet Skagen many years ago and he really seemed to like it, so I'm thinking metal bracelet.
    • I don't think he particularly cares about quartz versus automatic, though I'd lean toward automatic for him, if possible.
    • Since he's a marathon runner, I think a chronograph feature might be desirable.
    • Since he's a nurse practitioner as well as an officer, I suspect a second hand will be helpful, too (not sure if he's taking pulses these days, but just in case).
    • He's not a WIS, so he probably won't care about brand pecking order, but I'd prefer to get him something Swiss Made.

What might fit the bill? I've been thinking of an Oris, a Longines Hydroconquest, or a Hamilton or Glycine chronograph. I think he might really like a Tag Heuer (more mainstream brand recognition; again, he's not a WIS), but I realize I'm just not going to find a new automatic one with that budget. Other brands and models to consider? Thanks!

Maybe an Oris Pro Pilot? Or is it Big Pilot? I can't recall. Anyway, it's a nice utilitarian field/military style. It's Swiss and Oris quality is first rate.

Steinhart has marine chronos, auto and manual, just over your upper limit.
It might be a good idea to research watches for runners. That seems to be the most unusual use for the watch. But there are tons of watches out there specifically for running. So maybe eliminate the chrono feature because he'll allready have a watch for running? Doing so would bring many more mechanical Swiss watches within your budget.

As a marathoner, I would never run with a "real" watch, especially on a bracelet. The new Garmin watches, and others of that ilk, just do so much more than a standard auto ever could.

So I agree, if running was the only reason for a chrono, scrap it and open up your options. That would introduce tons of options like most of the Hamilton Khaki line.

You aren't going to find a new Tag for less than $1500. I'd go with a Hamilton. They have some sweet watches in the under $1000 range, have legit US/Swiss heritage and brand recognition. Ashford has a great selection of Hamiltons, including a pre-owned section that are former display models and in pristine condition. I bout two pre-owned Hamiltons from them and could not tell they were not new. Here are some suggestions.

Hamilton Khaki Field H71466553 Men's Watch , watches

    Hamilton Jazzmaster H32606185 Men's Watch , watches

    Hamilton H71416137 Watch , watches

"Affordable" just means you end up spending the same amount of money, but end up with a greater number of watches. -MandoBear
