    Sub-$600 Swiss Watch Recommendations

I have been looking into watches lately. Originally I was considering the Citizen Eco Drive AT4008-51e. I really liked the look of the silver bracelet because it seems like it would go with anything. I liked the watch because it seemed like an everyday wear, whether it be casual or dressy. I walked into the jeweler set on the citizen. He started telling me how much nicer he though a Swiss watch was, and how for 1 or 2 hundred more dollars could get me a Swiss or even an Swiss automatic. We looked at acouple that I really liked. My two favorites that we looked at were the Victorinox Chrono Classic and the Tissot PRS516 (automatic). I really like the look of all 3 of these watches, but wanted to see what else was out there. Do you guys have any recommendations for me in my price range? I could possibly go alittle over if it was a very nice watch.

Hamiltons are swiss made and they offer some of the most classic designs out there in automatics in your price range. Give them a look

A lesson I learned too well. I'm already planning the purchase of my second Hamilton sometime next week. My first one has been stellar in the short time I've owned it. It's gained +4 seconds in the past 53 hours, and it simply looks superb.

My next one will be the Hamilton King Khaki, and I will also soon be ordering a Hamilton Intra-Matic.

I'll also chime in for the Hamilton. That's a pretty watch.

That said, there's nothing especially nicer about a Swiss watch over a Japanese one for the same amount of money. I can't help but wonder about your jeweler's motivations a little. If anything, Japanese watches often give better "bang for your buck."

Personally, if I had $600 I'd be looking at a Seiko SARB (just Google image "SARB" to see a variety of very nice watches in almost exactly your price range).

I'm guessing he preferred Swiss because they are the leaders in watch making. Now I see most of you are picking out more simple watches. No dials, no numbers. Is this because it is more of a more simple everyday watch? I do like the sarb alot. The only reason I don't like the Hamilton is because it looks good in a leather band, but I would like to start out with a stainless steel braclet. The sarb looks good with the black face and the braclet.

I would agree with that 100%. I will say that, at least in the U.S,. there is a "commonness" about Citizen and Seiko* that he probably is trying to get the OP past by offering the "new horizons" that Swiss Watches offer. Obviously it is a way to get the customer to $pend more, but he is also trying to sell the image that this is a major upgrade versus the same stale Japanese stuff that is ubiquitous here.

*Lamentably, what is seen almost exclusively in the U.S. for Citizen and especially Seiko is the same tired models. Both brands offer so much more in their respective stables, especially in their automatics, than is seen in most places that sell these brands. That really stinks, and plays a major part in the bias against these brands in this country IMO.
