Is there any harm in setting a watch anti-clockwise?

I was once told that when setting a mechanical watch you should run the hands around clockwise to get to the desired time. That you shouldn't turn it backwards even if only to go back one hour. Is this true?
Is there any harm is moving a mechanical watch backwards (anti-clockwise) to set the time? Any difference in doing this to new or vintage mechanicals?

Movement dependent. Read the manual and it should let you know. Good Luck!
